Fishblogging, Day 1

Finally, finally, finally.

On a tip from a friend of mine, Jim and I checked out this lake that’s pretty close and that we didn’t even know existed.  It’s a small lake but we were the only ones fishing (could be because of the nakkshi gumji – no fishing allowed – signs posted around the lake).

Looks like a great lake to fish, right?

Another pic of the lake.

We didn’t do so hot at this spot.  Jim was fishing for bluegill so I walked down the road looking for a good place to get close to the water.  I got to one spot where there were no trees or bushes, but the road was about 10 feet up the bank.  I had put new line on my rod last night so I made a cast from the road just to make sure my line wouldn’t come off the reel tangled or twisted and as I brought the worm near the shore, a bass hit, and it hit hard, but went directly into the weeds along the bank.  Remember, I was 10 feet up the bank, standing in the road and there was no way for me to get down to the water.  Needless to say, I lost that fish.  After that, I walked all around the lake and tried a few more spots and caught one small bass and that was all she wrote.  Jim caught no bluegill at all – not even a bite so we decided to head on over to our favorite cove on Songjeon lake even though we knew that the water level is way up, meaning there’s almost no shoreline to fish from.

Here’s a pic Gar will be proud of.

The water level in Songjeon lake is real high again so if we want to go back there, we’ll have to try a different spot than the cove we usually fish.  I ended up with a whopping total of four bass caught today and this was the biggest of the lot.  I swear I don’t know how a fish that small even goes after a 5″ Senko – the lure is almost as big as the fish!  Even though we didn’t do so good, it sure was a beautiful afternoon and it felt damned good to get out and do some fishing again.  Hopefully I can redeem myself on one of the two days left this three-day weekend.

That’s what… a 4.27 pounder? Hopefully I’ll see you on the river tomorrow with Rob… I’m taking the fly rod. I did the same thing you did today, except I couldn’t find the lake no one knows is there (except John the Original)… I burned a 1/4 tank of gas driving around the country looking for it though, which wasn’t all that bad because I had my MP3 dialed in and was still quite buzzed from Friday night. I caught one of similar size on a pay lake using a fly-popper. Just practicing for those trout around the corner. See you tomorrow I hope.

Nomad, sent you an email. We didn’t have much luck yesterday but will be out there again today. Give me a call when you get out of church.

I guess even if someone asked you why you were fishing… you could always play “I don’t speak Korean”. It always works for me at security guard houses :)
