What do fishing and one-year birthday parties have in common?

Not much, except they both took up my entire Saturday.

Yesterday morning four of us headed out to Gosam lake for some fall bass fishing.  We rented boats and were in the water by 6:45 – those of you who were up at that time (and I have a feeling there aren’t many of you that fit into this category) know it was pretty nippy out so Ty and I immediately headed for any spot that wasn’t in shade.  Jim and his boat-mate, however, headed straight for the other side of the lake which doesn’t get sun until later in the day due to the hills and trees along the shore.

30 minutes after we started fishing, Ty and I looked across the lake and saw Jim and Bill on shore so we assumed they were taking a bathroom break until we saw Jim squatting down near some brush.  “What’s he doing, taking a dump on shore?” asked Ty.  “Hell if I know,” I said, laughing. “Should we go over there and take a picture for the blog?”  Suddenly we saw wisps of smoke – they were making a fire!  LOL, Jim didn’t take into account that it would be even colder out on an open lake and had only worn a light jacket and now he was paying the price.  Luckily for him the wind didn’t pick up till later in the day.

As you can see from the above picture, it turned out to be a beautiful day.  Unfortunately, right after taking this pic, the batteries in my camera died so this is all she wrote which is a shame since we did ok with the fishing.  We quickly found out that the bass were doing the same thing we were – staying in the sunny spots and away from shade and cover.  Ty and I ended up keeping 6, the largest of which was around two pounds and we may have done even better, but we had to leave early because a young couple in our church was having a one-year birthday party for their son.  Not just a party, but a huge Korean-style buffet in a wedding hall and since Mrs. Nomad had “asked” me to go with her, I had no choice told her I’d go.  Good thing I went because after being out on the water most of the day, I was plenty hungry and stuffed myself to the point I couldn’t move.  The best I could do after getting home was to flop down on the bed and start watching the HBO series Rome, which seems to be pretty good from what I saw last night.

I’m not sure how many more fishing days are left but I hope to get at least a couple more in before it gets too cold.
