It’s been a great weekend so far

First, a little Nomad tradition history:  Back when I was younger, and my liver and the rest of my body could handle the abuse, I used to take a day or two vacation on my birthday and I spent those evenings celebrating with my good buddy Jack Daniels.  Now that I’m quite a bit older and who knows, maybe, just maybe, a little wiser, I still take some time off but instead of getting stupid drunk, I go and do me some fishing.

That being said, I took Friday off and headed out to near Asan Bay with Jim and Ty. We thought for sure we were going to get skunked because the water was muddy from the hard rains we had earlier in the week but to our suprise, we caught a few bass.  I forgot my camera, so you’ll have to take my word on that.  We headed out again today and did pretty good, although we could and should have done much better than we did (more on that in a second).

Here are a couple of pics of Jim and Ty holding up today’s catch, most of which they get credit for (again, more on that in a second).

I caught this one right as we were getting ready to leave, in a spot that was my nemesis for most of the day.

I don’t even know how many fish we missed today but for me, it was a record.  I don’t know if I was having a bad day, if I was using the wrong size hooks, or what –  but I missed so many fish today that I was getting ticked off at one point.  I went to one spot and threw out the worm and right after it hit the water, a bass grabbed it and headed out for deeper water.  I went to set the hook and my line broke right at the hook, meaning I didn’t tie a good knot.  I rigged my line again and threw back in the same spot and immediately got another bite, which I lost after a brief fight.  Not to be discouraged, I kept at it and managed to miss a total of 8 bites in about one hour, all in the very same area – and not a single fish to show for it.  I bet the Korean guy fishing near me thinks all of us Americans swear like sailors because I know I was using some choice phrases while all this was going on.  Meanwhile, Jim and Ty were raking them in over on the other side.  I finally threw in the towel and went to another spot where thankfully, I did catch fish.  Later, just as we were getting ready to pack it in for the day, I went back to the first spot one more time and threw out my worm and a bass immediately hit it, and I jokingly told Ty to watch me demonstrate how not to catch a fish and guess what – I did lose that fish as well as I was reeling it in.  I threw out one last time, and lo and behold - another bite, which thankfully, I did manage to bring all the way to shore.  All in all, a good day, especially considering how muddy the water was…I have no idea how the bass even saw our lures.  If the weather holds up, we’re going to head out again tomorrow after church to see if we can do a repeat of today (minus all the missed fish, of course).

Wow, that’s some catch you got there! Mmmm I can see it now: grilled bass, rice, kimchi, and a nice mug of OB. Perfect!

I seem to remember you having this early release problem once last year. Is it just fishing?

Yeah I did have a similar problem last year but I remedied that by changing from size 1 to size 3 hooks. Here at Asan bay, we used mainly 3″ Senkos last year so for this location and the type lure we used, a #1 hook was ok. This year, the bass are preferring 5″ Senkos and since the fish aren’t as big as in some of the other places we fish, I went for a #2, thinking that would do the trick. Next time we go out, I’m trying a #3 to see if that makes a difference or not.
