Now I know

In past years, I’ve always wondered if the bass would be biting this time of year.  Today, I met Rob out at a lake near Songtan and we fished for about 3 hours – and not a single fish to show for it.  On top of that, there was a pretty brisk wind blowing in our face which didn’t help matters much.  Next November, I’ll stay home, surf for porn drink coffee and watch a good movie.

    Nomad,
Don’t give up yet. There may be a few chances left yet. Remember a bad day fishing is better than, well you know the rest.
BTW, let me introduce myself formally now. Fairly new to the ROK. I am a dentist out at Osan AB here for 3 years with the family (wife is Korean).
My fishing gear is on the way still, that’s why I haven’t been out yet. I have my 9 year old here with me and she likes to fish as well (as long as there is enough action to keep her off the video game). I have 2 main fishing interests, I enjoy fishing for carp and catfish using european style long rods over baited areas (boilies, maize, etc) and I also enjoy fishing the surf with long surfcasting gear. I have already visited the lake near Osan and have it down as a potential carping location in the spring. That type of fishing is too boring for my daughter. I was wondering if any members here have info on local pay lakes or carping areas that may be a little more exciting for the rugrat. Also any info on possible places to fish the surf would be appreciated. Right now I am researching Yeongheungdo island out past Daebudo straight west of Suwon.
Thanks in advance to anyone who can help with info.
    Dave

    Also,
does anyone have a link to a “good” online interactive map of korea. google maps has a great areal photograph but the roadmap is missing. a korean website is OK as well.
    Thanks in advance,

    Dave,

I’m really bad with directions but here’s a map which shows two pay lakes (trout) close to here. I believe both stock carp in the spring/summer/fall.

You really should go to Anglerstown, check out the site, and then email the webmaster with some questions. He speaks good English, and can point you in the right direction and/or hook you up with someone (Korean) who knows more about what you’re asking than I do. I fish mainly for bass and bluegill.

Went fishing down on “Ansan Lake” (down near the Seohae Bridge) with my wife’s brother’s in-laws today and what a fiasco. It was along the seawall so it was bottom-fishing. I am a novice fisherman and don’t know squat on fishing Korean-style. However, I did learn a lot from the folks
    – though I’m not sure about using a xmas tree hook setup with heavy lead weight is the best for casting and bottom fishing.

Went down there about 3 o’clock to wait for high tide, but what a disappointment. The “Ansan Lake” side filled so slowly because of the sluice gates, that it was dark before any semblance of a rise was seen — and it was still too low. I got what appeared to be a baby carp — and that was it. My nephew’s uncle got four lungfish but he had to wade out in the mud and cast into the mud channel. Everyone else packed up and went home.

Went to the other side of the dike and the water was higher, but the fishing was so poor that all the folks on that side packed up and went home too.

Well, anyway, I had fun even if it wasn’t good fishing because the weather was so mild. But I learned a valuable lesson. Wear gloves when fishing along the seawall. I stepped in the mud — like a fool — and my shoe stuck from the suction and I fell and slashed my hands very nicely on the
barnacles on the rocks. Kept right on fishing — blood is good to attract fish and there aren’t mud sharks on the tidal flats, right? Next time I wear cloth gloves.

Maybe someday I’ll learn how to fish.

The maps indicated don’t help much in finding Seongun(sic)lake. I was in the area and still couldn’t find it without help. But it does have a lot of trout in winter time.

How are you researching the ocean fishing? Best I have been able to figure out so far is finding sea walls and fishing from them such as on the island Inchon Airport is on.
