Nomad skips church, goes fishing

To celebrate its 33rd birthday, our church had a combined service in the Songtan Civic Center today, followed by food and games/sports.  Since I’m not a big fan of crowds, I somehow talked my way out of having to go.  Mrs. Nomad didn’t even give me “the look” but I think that was partially due to the fact that tomorrow is my birthday, and her knowing how bad I wanted to go fishing again today.  And fishing I went.

Rob and I met over at Camp Humphreys at six, and rode out in his Jeep to a lake about 30 minutes outside of Dunpo.  (Click on pics to see full-sized images)

We’ve always done pretty good at this lake, and today was no exception.  Even though it was cloudy, windy and a bit chilly, we still managed to catch bass – on Senkos, chatterbaits and spinner baits.

This one was caught on a watermelon-colored 5″ Senko, which was the color of choice today for some reason.  I think I only had one hit on the black Senkos.

And this one was caught on a black and red spinner bait.  Heh, I think this may be the biggest bass I’ve caught in Korea on a spinner bait.  Rob’s done real well with them over here, but I’ve had a hard time catching decent bass on spinner baits in Korea the few times I have tried them.  I think part of that is because I’m so used to using plastic worms and I’ve had such good luck with Senkos that I rarely use any other lures.  Stick with what works, right?  But today, we saw another guy we know, and as we watched him fish, was saw him catch one bass after the other.  It turns out that he was using a orange/green 1/4 ounce spinner bait and the bass were tearing it up.  Two times in a row, he had a bass on as soon as his lure hit the water – if I didn’t see it with my own eyes, I wouldn’t have believed it.  So I thought, “what the heck” and put on a spinner bait - on the second cast, I caught the fish in the pic above.  Rob put on a yellow chatterbait and soon landed a nice one as well.

Every weather site I checked is calling for tomorrow to be a gorgeous day and I hope they’re right, because I plan on celebrating my birthday by taking the day off and going fishing.

Thanks Kevin. Three more and it’s the big five-oh…where the heck does the time go?

    Happy Birthday, old man.

Yeah, we skipped out too. I wound up doing copious amounts of yard work. Re-seeding the lawn and spreading out the Scott’s weed -n- feed. My wife has a huge flower/shrub/tree garden going, as well as a decent little vegetable garden. Gochu is going in the ground in a couple weeks and I need to find jalapeno seeds somewhere soon.

Back to playing hooky, the combined service at the civic center reminded me of a circus last time we went. Honestly, I can’t imagine being a member of a church with more than 200 folks in attendance. I want a more family-like atmosphere where I know most everyone’s name. It sure isn’t that way on the Korean side. Then there’s those intermittently operational translation boxes…

Thanks Dave…where the heck are you living now that you have the luxury of yard work? If you ever need anyone to help with the gardening, I’m here :)

Just go to the commissary, buy fresh jalapenos and take out the seeds…that should work, right?

Dude, I’m living in my mega-pyeong house. I’m in that little community east of the Little Highway 1 ‘Y’ (just south of the new fire station). I will never, ever live in one of those parking-challenged concrete boxes again.

The lawn is my bag. All else is as directed by the Boss. I guess I’d rather be fishing. I’ll have you guy over for BBQ in the summer.

I think all the miracle working stuff in the seeds gets killed by the acetic acid bath (a.k.a.: pickling) :)

Hey everyone! Party at Dave’s! Wooooot! :D

  7. Nomad says:

Be careful, William. It’s a trick. Once we show up, we’ll end up mowing the lawn and pulling weeds out of the garden.
But I do hear that Dave makes some awesome homemade beer ;)

Since you skipped a service, go here and listen to Dr. Charles Stanley’s sermon.
