Nomad skips work, goes fishing

The plan was to be at the lake at six, and get there at six I did.  Yesterday, Rob discovered a trail that leads to nice cove in an area of the lake I haven’t fished yet, so this morning I parked the car, gathered my gear and made the hike through the woods and over the hills.  It was quite the nice morning:  No breeze, just the right temperature for a brisk hike, and best of all, once I arrived I was pleased to see that I was the only one on that part of the lake.

Look how still that water was – nice, isn’t it?  (as always, click to see full-sized pics)  The first hour was kind of uneventful.  I had one bite and I was starting to worry that I was going to get skunked but all at once it was like someone had turned on a switch and the bass became active.

I threw spinner baits, crank baits, and Senkos and the only thing the fish would hit were the Senkos – watermelon was again the favorite color of the day.  I caught these three and lost two, all within 45 minutes of each other. I should have stayed right there but my plan was to fish there for about two hours, then make the hike back and fish another part of the lake.  Bad idea.  Once I got to near where I parked the car, I fished up and down the entire shoreline and not a single bite.  I don’t know if the fish just stopped biting, period, or if I made a bad decision (that’s my guess) by leaving that first spot.  There were a couple of other fishermen and they weren’t having any luck either.  As much as I wanted to, I wasn’t about to lug my gear back over hill and dale so I’ll chalk it up as a lesson learned and next time (hopefully this Saturday),  I’ll stay where the action is, once I find it.

Funny you mention that, Bill. I have to go up to Seoul this Wednesday for some training.

Happy birthday, brother. I wished I had skipped work today as well, but I had some post-ORI cleanup to do. I did, however, treat myself to a run on perimeter road. I got to test out my new Garmin GPS-powered stopwatch. What a great day it was!

    Dave,

Careful with that running…you’re no spring chicken yourself ;)

    Another Basser,

I’ve never caught one of those…what did you catch it on? I heard they put up a pretty good fight.

    Happy birthday…

I hope to get some fishing done this year after missing last year. A doctor friend from elementary school is going to be back in this area a few months out of the year and has a nice bass boat, I’m hoping to go with him early this summer.

On holes, when I was doing a lot of fishing two years ago, I wanted to enjoy being back in the north GA mountains area and fish along creek and stream banks and explore, but I found my creature of habit instincts kick in and I kept going back to the same fishing holes where I knew I’d catch something…

    Nomad,
I caught it on a small white/blue spinnerbait. He hammered it and I thought I had a 5 to 6 lb. bass. Other than that…it’s the same as landing a bass…..don’t give them slack….very hard bodies…no real hook set!! The hook fell out when on the bank.

You forgot the sharp teeth…reminds me of the bowfin we used to fish for in Georgia when nothing else was biting. Put a small bluegill on a big hook, cast it out and let it sit on the bottom and wait. Bowfin (or mudfish, as the locals called them) are strong and put up an excellent fight.

    Nomad,
How about a picture of a Bowfin? I’ve never heard of them. I suppose I could just Google it…
