And the moral of this story is; you’re never too busy to go fishing. Our landlord was having the linoleum replaced in our kitchen and living room today, which meant that my wife and I had quite a bit of furniture and other stuff to move out of the way in both rooms. So I really didn’t plan on going fishing today at all, even though I had already moved a bunch of stuff last night. But I woke up at 3:30 (on a Saturday, no less!) and got on line to see if Rob was also up – and he was, so we said the heck with it and decided to meet at Idong lake, which has been kicking our butts so far this year – until today, that is. First, let’s get the dawn pics out of the way:
As I said, today was a pretty good morning. We caught plenty of decent-sized bass and also found the big bluegill that are usually so prevalent in Idong (if you can find them) and which are a blast to catch with an ultralight outfit.
Rob was raking in the bass using a Chatterbait lure, and I was using my favorite, a 5″ black Senko. Here are some of the bass Rob caught on the Chatterbait:
And some of the fish caught on Senkos:
And let’s not forget those slab-sized bluegill which we caught on 1/16 ounce white rooster tails and small crank baits:
Unfortunately, the fish stopped biting by 9 or so which was actually a good thing….it was starting to get hot out and I had to get home to help move the rest of the furniture before the floor guy showed up. I think today was one of the best days we’ve had fishing so far this year and it was certainly the best day we’ve had on this lake in a while. I don’t know what the problem’s been with Idong this year but I suspect 2 things: The pressure from so many fishermen that have started going out there in the last year, and the rapid changes in water levels the lake has seen this year, two of which occurred right during spawning time. All in all, I’m damned happy I woke up early and decide to head on out.
Nice haul,
almost went out there this morning myself, but had some business to take care of on the base.
Plan on going somewhere tomorrow morning.
Dave,
If you do go, go early…the earlier the better. As usual (on that lake), as soon as the sun started hitting the water directly, it was like someone had hit a switch and turned off the fish.
And yeah, today was one of “those” days…most excellent
You should have gone to Andong and joined in with the monster bass catching.
How’d ya do Another Basser? I work with the guy who placed 9th, and another one of my friend’s came in 3rd. Tex Mex and Gar, how’d you guys do? KSA usually has the results up by now, don’t know why they’re late this time. Also, just curious, did they release the fish this year or did they meet the same fate as last year?
Rob,
The tournament was great and they did the right thing by releasing all the bass. I don’t know how some of the other guys did but me and my partner were oh so close to winning the whole thing. We had four fish for a total of 7.4 Kilos. My partner had one on right at the boat that went close to six pounds and right as I was about to lip it, it went for one more run right to the prop and broke off. That one hurt bad. I lost three that all went over three pounds and my partner lost another two that also went a little over three pounds. That’s the chance you take using light line. All in all I saw a lot of good size bass caught and it was great they released them. Gar looked like he had himself a good time especially the night before with all the food, beer and commaraderie. You guys need to make the next one at Chunchon. Looks like you all did very well a Idong. I got to get down there and give that lake a try.
LOL, glad to hear it and that’s the Gar we all know and love
Thanks for the update Tex Mex, and I’m glad to hear that you guys had a great time. When is the one in Chunchon? September?
Rob,
According to Walt, it is sometime in September. The lake down there is very beautiful but the bass are nowhere the size of the ones in Andong.
Rob,
What is the website address to KSA.
Tex Mex, it’s http://www.sportfishing.co.kr. They have some nice pics up now.
Very nice.
Rob,
I’m no computer whiz, but do you have any idea why this site won’t open up. I remember before having the same problems opening this site.
Weird, I’ve never had a problem getting to http://www.sportfishing.co.kr./ from either of my commercial accounts.
I fished with the “KSA fisherman of the year.” I landed one bass just under 3 lbs and lost a couple of others. He caught one bass under 1 lb.
I had a lot of short bites resulting in missed hook-sets and reeling in half a worm with the tail bit off.
Everyone seemed to have had an excellent time. Barbeque was a blast. Lots of soju, Corona’s, fireworks, and even a little guitar/singing.
I’ll go again in the fall.
[...] got up early again and headed out to my favorite lake this morning, hoping to have a repeat of last Saturday’s fishing experience. Much to my surprise, the water lever had dropped at least 5 feet since last [...]
