Today is my mother-in-law’s birthday and every year, we invite her and some of the in-laws over to our house for dinner and a small celebration. Even though I wanted to go fishing, I reluctantly promised my wife I’d stay home today so I could help out and be home when the folks started arriving. Rob, the good buddy that he is, took this as an opportunity to go fishing without me so that he could send me a text message every time he caught a bass just to let me know what I was missing. And judging from his pictures, I missed out on a heck of a great day. Rob even got in some dawn pics (click to see full-sized pics):
“Those are real nice” you say, “but did he catch any fish?” Yep, he sure did. Check ‘em out:
As you can see, all bass were caught on a chartreuse, 1/2 ounce Chatterbait. Today’s score: Chatterbait 9, Senkos 0, and I can only hope that the KMA is wrong about the monsoons starting next week…

Nice job Rob!!
I didn’t know that chartreuse was a color that worked over here.
I thought only black or black/blue.
Dave
Dave,
Have you been out at Idong lately? It’s downright terrible right now.

Wow,
I was out there last Saturday afternoon. It was really low then, but this is rediculous now. Was thinking about trying it this afternoon or tomorrow morning. What lake was Rob on this morning?
Dave
Well if the monsoons come maybe Idong will fill back up for fishing this fall.
Dave,
Idong is down at least 3 feet or more since last weekend and yesterday afternoon, was about twice as muddy as last week. Yeah, we need some heavy rains bad to fill and clear the lake back up.
Rob was fishing at a lake near Dunpo, quite a ways south of Humphreys. He also kicked ass out on the river earlier this week.
If the lake stays low like this through next weekend, I may pull out the long rods, lantern, get some cut bait, and try some nightfishing for some cats or what other types of bottom predators they have here.
I brought three 11′ surf rods here with me each with about 330 yds of 30# mono. Plus I have a couple of the Korean 3.0m telescopic carp spinning rods.
Been meaning to try to fish the surf at Janggyeongri Beach or Simnipo Beach on Yeongheungdo Island (top left corner page 27 of the atlas). With that new bridge built a few years ago, we can now drive all the way out there without taking the ferry.
May have to check it out soon, especially if the freshwater fishing comes to a halt.
Dave
Rob,
Looks like you’ve been tearing them up lately. I never had much luck with the chartreuse colored stuff in Korea except for plastic centipede worms in the Nakdong river in Pusan. Are you catching them all in the early early hours before the sun or even light comes up?
Tex Mex,
Rob is definitely one of the best I’ve fished with. His biggest assets as a fisherman, IMO, are patience and the willingness to try something else. For example, I’ll fish a spot for so long (probably longer than most) but if I don’t catch something within a certain amount of time, I’m on to the next spot. Rob will stay there and end up catching something. I’m also partial to sticking with what’s worked in the past at each particular body of water and I know for a fact that’s cost me a few fish. Rob will try different lures and different colors, and by doing so, usually catches more bass than the other people around him.
I’ve never had a lot of luck with the chartreuse-colored spinner baits either except on that small lake on 82 where I think those small bass will hit about anything you throw at them.
Thanks Dave. I’ve always had really good luck on anything chartreuse colored. A few years back all I used to fish with was a chartreuse colored spinner bait. Tuesday evening out at the river I caught all of ‘em right at sunset, and yesterday I caught all of them before 0700. I’ve always liked fishing at dawn and dusk, unless I’m out on a lake with a cooler full of beer. Given that scenario I can fish all day! lol
Gee Nomad, thanks for the compliments, but you’re still not getting my Bud Light! lol
That fish looks dead, Did you snag it ?
lol Odie! Actually, they’re all different fish though. Has it been six months yet?
Summer in Afghanistan, Its a great get away vacation in the mountains,No big city traffic here,Its like the Flintstones with guns, Reminds me of Indiana,
Those photos are amazing, especially the first one!
K, thanks. I took those with a Sony Cyber-shot 8.1 megapixel camera.
For a $250 camera I’m pretty impressed with it.
