Make that three

Three days of fun in the sun, that is.  This morning, I woke up nice and early but I was undecided about going fishing again.  I didn’t feel like going to the river; not on a Saturday when every good spot would be full of carp fishermen but after I had a cup of coffee, I decided to head to a lake I know which is out near Dunpo.  I figured that since I was up anyway, and the weather was nice, I may as well take advantage of it – and I’m glad I did.

Like I said, the weather was perfect and when I arrived, I saw that the lake was nice and still but it was also muddy and still had that green pollen floating on the surface in a lot of areas.  When I saw the water conditions, I almost left to try another spot but figured since I was there, I may as well go ahead and give it a try.  It’s a good thing I did, because today was one of the best days I’ve ever had on this lake.

I walked the shore and looked for any spots that I thought may hold bass; rocks, dropoffs, weedy areas and overhanging trees.  All I used today were 4-inch Senkos, in dark green and black colors.  With the water being so murky, I used a jerky retrieve to make as much commotion in the water as possible and it worked in almost every spot I tried.  The bass were very aggressive and they were nailing the Senkos left and right but like I said, I had to use a retrieve that got the lure noticed.

I caught a lot of bass today, and most of them were on the small side but as you can see in the above pics, I did catch a few decent ones as well.  Maybe all those articles I read about a few weeks in the fall being as good as the spring spawn were right after all because this last week has been excellent fishing, indeed.

Some of the best times I’ve ever had, both hunting and fishing, have been when I thought I wasn’t going to do that well for one reason or another.

Way to go! And as always, nice pics…

I remembered that good day you had out there when the water was muddy so I tried a chartreuse chatterbait like you did, but no dice. Well, I didn’t make that many casts with it either because I wanted to stick with what was working :)

Well you did much better than we did today. Here’s my Sunday report. Me and my two cousins decided to head out again with high hopes following our trip on Tuesday, but today hardly nothing was biting for us. Started off at the lake southeast of the Anseong Rest Area. Arrived early at 0600, threw senkos and chatterbaits with only 4 very small hookups. Later moved to the East shallows of Idong, looking for bass, no luck there. Made our way over to the Hwy 82 lake looking for bluegills, only one keeper size landed after a couple of hours trying. Early afternoon, notice the carp starting to rise for some sun. Managed to get one nice one to bite on live bait. (about 4 pounds). Can see it here: http://www.lonestarfishingbrigade.com/index_files/p071014113341.jpg
Since I can’t figure out how to post pictures here. Sorry about the poor picture quality as it was taken with my camera phone.
On a side note, the trout over at the lake by the rest area were really working the surface this morning. Saw several nice rainbows and many others. There are already people out there flyfishing. Saw one dude hookup on the flyrod with a real nice trout. I’ve already got my Berkley Power Bait on order.

    Dave,

Idong has really been frustrating this year. Last year, I could walk the shore with an ultralight, using a white rooster tail and I could catch keeper bluegill, one after the other. One day, I caught well over 60 (all catch & release) but this year, I don’t think I caught over 15 keeper bluegill out there – all year. Same for the bass…I had a couple of decent days, but nothing like previous years.

    Gar,

Thanks, I had a blast out there :)

The river is still providing some quality bass fishing these days.
