Nigerian Tuna

I miss catching Bass in Korea, but I need to make money…….

Right now I’m working in Nigeria on a oil and gas platform 70 miles from the nearest land and in 1 mile deep sea. Around one week ago I had the chance of doing a little hand-line fishing with some of the Philipene workers.

We were using freshly caught live bait on a single hook and a large bolt as a weight. I’m not sure how deep I was fishing, but I guess it was around 100 yards, maybe more.

Here’s the fish I caught that night. It was the only fish I have caught as the platform has banned fishing from now on due to underwater works ongoing.

Here’s another fish caught by some other guys.

    Nice looking fish.

There ya go, Steve. Can’t let being 70 miles off shore stop you from fishing :)

  5. Steve says:

They have stopped the fishing from now on

I can’t wait to get back for some Bass fishing in March

It’s a shame you can’t fish out there no more. Those some nice looking fish. That last one looks like an Amberjack. I caught the smaller ones here in Korea, but that one there is a good sized one. Good luck to you out there and hope to see you for the bass tournaments when you get back.

  7. Steve says:

Tex, do you fish the big tournaments in Korea ?? I’m asking because I’d like some info about them….I’m finding it hard to get the right info !!!!

  8. Rob says:

    KSA

Here is their tournament schedule for 2008. I have no idea what you have to do to become a pro though. Also, I heard that they started up a new “challenger” amateur circuit this year, but again, I have no idea what you have to do to join up. If my Korean is any count (no guarantees there, lol), it looks like they’re having several Pro/Am tournaments, and several challenger series “open” tournaments this year as well. I assume that all you have to do to fish the “open” tournaments is show up and pay a fee.

I see most of them are at Andong, with only one at Idong (or Sojeong (송전지), as they call it) and another at Singal lake. So they won’t be going after the bass in our neck of the woods :)

This one is at Milyang river which is not too far from my home, but I’ll be back in Nigeria by then……

Thanks for the info Rob, I’m going to try and fish as many as I can this year.

Is Shingal North or South from you guys ?? I’ve seen and heard that the bass are BIG in Shingal and the have a good boating access.

  11. Tex Mex says:

    Steve,

Singal is between Seoul and Osan off of MSR 1 and definitely holds some big bass. The lake is very dirty though and smells bad but for some reason that same pollution that stinks up that lake, must also be the reason the bass grow big there. If you have a boat then you can hit many of the prime areas. There are some good bank fishing areas, but you will be fighting many of the Korean Carp fisherman and also the bass fisherman for a spot. Rob definitely got all the tournaments. Some of them are the ones where Americans without boats get to pair up with a Korean Pro. Walt Camnnon, who is out of Taegu and fishes as a Pro with the KSA boys usually gets the info out to the Americans. The ones in Andong, especially the ones on the May time frame, yield some good sized bass. You usually have to have about a four to five pound average (Best five bass) to win the thing. Take care.

  12. Steve says:

Thanks for the great info Tex, I REALLY want to fish some tournament this year, but with me being in Nigeria for 6 of the 12 months I will not be able to make them.

Nomad, that was a great post by John, but I think Shingal is just too far for me to bring my boat…..but maybe one day this year. I will have lots of spare time this year to fish during the week days

I think I’ll be going to Andong a few times this year !!!!

  13. Rob says:

Steve, did Alan and Walt not respond to you last year?

  14. Steve says:

Yes, we sent a few emails back and forward and helped me out a lot for fishing Andong, but for the tournament info they just told me to look at the KSA site (which is in Korean).

Me and my wife both found it difficult to figure out even though she’s Korean

  15. Rob says:

Alan or Walt one should have been able to hook you up. They’re both KSA pros. Maybe they’re trying to keep all of the good stuff to themselves!! I might have to send in the Nomad the terminator to shake ‘em up a bit. ;)

Seriously, I’ll try to get you a phone number to one of the Korean KSA guys. They should be able to fill you and your wife in on what you need to do. I’m headed to BassPia Saturday morning to pick up a few things. The owner used to run the KSA bass pro circuit and should be able to tell me who to contact.

By the way, I clicked on the “Challenger League” link on KSA’s main page and it takes you to a list of approximately 60 names. I’m wondering if pre-registration was required. Hmmm…..

  16. Steve says:

I appreciate all your help Rob, I’ll owe you a few beers when we hook up for some fishing.

As soon as I get off this rig and back on solid Korean ground I’ll get with the wife and get some serious searching done.

….send in the Nomad

  17. Rob says:

I’ll definitely take you up on the beers! But you don’t owe me anything… I’ll let you know what Mr. Yum says.

  18. Nomad says:

How’d I end up as a hit man in all this?

  19. Rob says:

Well, with you having watched all of those UFC fights I figured that you should have picked up a good move or two by now!! Take ‘em out, Nomad! :)

Steve, I sent you an email reference who to contact on the Challenger League.

  20. Steve says:

Got the email Rob thanks

As soon as I get back to dry land I’ll give him a call

  21. Rob says:

No problem man… You’re very welcome.

Although it’s pretty cold out today, it’s finally starting to warm up a bit in our neck of the woods. Yes sir, the ice is finally starting to melt. :)
