Seeing how nice the weather was today, Rob and I met at a lake near Dunpo to try our luck. Unfortunately, the bass weren’t cooperating and after a couple of hours, we headed for the Pyeongtaek river. The fishing there wasn’t a whole lot better but Rob did catch one, which is his first bass of the year.
That one was caught on a 5″ Senko (not sure what color Rob was using), fished very slow. I believe that was the only bite Rob had…which is one more than I had all day. On top of that, I managed to tangle the line on my bait caster reel so badly that I had to cut it all off. I managed to go all of last year without any bird nests, so I can’t complain…I was due
Great job Rob
I’m jealous, I won’t be fishing until Tuesday, I’ve got to do the family thing first
I’ll be glad to get a birds nest myself just so I can be at the water.
The weather’s looking good for next week
Even though you all only caught one, it beats staying at home watching someone else fish on videos. Nomad, there is nothing worst than a bad birds nest on the baitcaster. I’ve had my share and believe me at that time I wanted to throw the rod and reel in the water, but I reluctantly laid it down softly and started using spinning gear instead. No matter how expensive a baitcaster you get, it is bound to happen. You know the Pros suffer this also, but they never show it on their TV shows or videos. Just got a nice Pflueger Supreme spinning reel and Allstar rod combo for my Birthday, so I am itching to try it out. Hope I can join you all on a fishing expedition soon.
Tex Mex,
I hear you. I’ve yet to figure out what the advantage is of a bait caster over a spinning reel, as I can do everything better with a spinning reel; cast farther, cast more precisely, avoid birds nests (and the occasional tangle on a spinning reel is much easier and faster to clean up). But, I did spend the money on a bait caster so I take it along on my fishing trips so I can practice and get used to it.
Congrats Rob!
I still can’t pull myself to get out yet.
Still have skiing on my mind.
Gone 7 times in the last 2 months and I am totally addicted.
Got one more trip out on Mar 22.
On Mar 23 will be time to pick up the rods and the golf clubs.
Anybody see any bluegill sunning in the afternoon yet?
Dave
Thanks guys. It was nice just to get out there and wet a line. I caught it on a 5″ black Senko with blue flake, which is one I had never tried before.
Hunterdave, I “heard” that they’re catching bluegill on the north end of Idong, but I got that second hand so take it with a grain of salt…
Anyone ever use a shaky head rig? I tried it for a while yesterday but have no idea if I was doing it right or not.
Two friends of mine went to the north end of Idong yesterday afternoon and they tried for both bluegill and bass; not a single bite – and they didn’t see anyone else catch anything either, for what that’s worth.
Nice jacket Rob.
Mark
Thanks! I’m going to wear it to work on Monday!
It’s actually a pretty comfortable jacket…
Nomad,
I’m like you. I own a top of the line Bass Pro Shop baitcaster and take it every where I go but always end up using spinning tackle instead. Before I came to Korea, I always used nothing but baitcasters but seeing how the Koreans are strong spinning tackle users I myself gave in and use spinning tackle almost all the time. I enjoy the fight on 6 pound test and a light spinning outfit. The last tournament in Andong, I caught everythng on 6 lb test spinning tackle and landed two that went close to 5 puinds. I just enjoy catching fish much more more with spinning tackle but just like you will always take my baitcasting equipment with me.
“Anyone ever use a shaky head rig? I tried it for a while yesterday but have no idea if I was doing it right or not”.
Rob, I am a prostaff for a company (Parasite) that sells shakey heads and I have a few of their products. Just fish it how you (or the fish) like it
The link to Parasite is on the right hand side of this site.
I fish it with a Baby Brush Hog, plastic craw or a 6 inch “floating” worm and hop it slowly off the bottom.
Rob,
Echoing everyone else, nice bass. Here it is the middle of March and I haven’t caught one yet.
I’ve been fishing the shakey heads for a few years now and I’d rather use it than a drop shot for most finesse situations. I always using a floating worm, like a Zoom trick worm or the local Diamiki Air Porket worm (not a typo, that’s what’s on the package)on an eighth or three sixteenth ounce head. Throw it out, let it sink and just shake the tip of your rod, trying not to move the rig. You really need to be a line watcher, most strikes are very subtle. I’ve caught some nice sized bass on the rig, especially at Andong, but in the river it’s deadly for the smallies, like the ones Frank catch
Hey I’m right here, you know! I heard that!
Thanks for the advice Steve and John.
Nice fish. I caught one about the same size yesterday at the Pyongtaek River which was my first one of the year. I caught it on a Rapala floating minnow (F-11, silver and black). I also missed another one on a Bass Assassin. There were several other Koreans fishing around the area but I didn’t see another bass from anyone. Have you guys noticed how high the water is in the Pyongtaek River? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it that high except after a big rain. It should be good for the fishing though.
There is a KBA tournament this Sunday (16 MAR) at Shingal. I am signed up for it I THINK!?? We’ll see how it goes. If not, I’ll hit a lake somewhere else. Anyone else going? I usually fish the KSA tournaments more than the KBA, but since this one is so close, I decided to go ahead and give it a shot. Is anyone else signed up for it? It isn’t an international tournament, but the guy I called said foreigners could fish it if signed up in time. There is a KSA international tourney coming up at Andong on 30 MAR too. I want to try to make that one if I can as well.
DinkMaster, I’ve noticed that most of the fishing holes are full this year, which is a good thing. I don’t fish the tournaments, but some of these other guys do. I’ll definitely be out there this weekend, although I’m not for sure exactly where yet. I think we still have a couple of weeks left before the shoreline bite picks up. I’m just hoping that it doesn’t rain as much this summer as it did last. Man, we sure had one wet summer last year.
Correction…the 30 MAR KSA tourney at Andong is NOT an international tournament. Sorry for the bad info. (But you still might be able to fish it if you try.)
It’s a Pro/Am, so if you know a Pro who’ll let you hop aboard his boat, you can fish it. The International is June 8th.
