Weekend Fishing Report

I agree with Nomad.  It’s definitely picking up out there.  My wife and I went to the river early yesterday morning and were able to land seven before the gale force winds that Nomad mentioned below drove us away.  Leave it to Mother Nature to ruin an otherwise perfect day!  :)   I don’t have a scale (that works anyway), and didn’t have anything to measure the fish with either, but here are a few pics nonetheless:

Then, I was over in the Anjung-ri area this morning running errands when I noticed (quite surprisingly, since it was Sunday) that nobody was fishing in one of mine and Nomad’s favorite spots, so I couldn’t resist the urge to wet a line for a little bit.  I only fished for about an hour, had a couple of bites, and caught this one.  Again, I didn’t have a scale, but did have a tape measure in the truck this time and it measured pretty close to 17″.  All in all it was a pretty good weekend, and I hope the trend continues for a while.

Nice fish, Rob and even with the wind, it was a good weekend to be out there, wasn’t it? I know it’s still early (LOL, the weekend isn’t over yet) but so far, KMA has next Saturday looking good and I know that 50cm bass is out there, waiting on us. Hey, that rock in the bottom pic, I’m pretty sure I’ve seen that before

  2. Rob says:

    Thanks Nomad, and LOL!

I wouldn’t put too much stock in KMA though. I don’t know why, but I just don’t trust those guys for some reason.

  3. Ty Thomas says:

Rob, the fish look good. Hey nice boat, you can get to any fishing hole with that boat. Look foward to seeing you at a fishing hole some day soon. Take Care!

  4. Rob says:

Thanks Ty. The boat is not the easiest thing in the world to setup and take apart, but your’e right, it does allow you to get out there. Yesterday was the first time I used it, and it was definitely a learning experience.

  5. Nomad says:

    Rob,

Yeah, yesterday they were calling for “no wind” but I found out different and btw, 17″ = 43cm. Not bad, not bad at all :)

    Hey Rob,
    Nice going on the bass.
I’ll bet its a lot nicer being mobile like that.
Can you give us the particulars on your boat?
Kind of looks like a port-a-boat.
I’ve still got 2 1/2 more years here and have been looking for something portable as well.

  7. Rob says:

Yes Nomad, I was pleasantly surprised. That fish was real shallow too, sitting in no more than a couple feet of water.

I think predicting the weather is still more of an art than it is a science, especially for the KMA folks over here… At least they are consistent with their inaccurate forecasts. lol

Thanks Dave, and yes it’s a portaboat. I’ll send you an email with some pics.

    Rob,
I’ve been looking at this thing for the past few months:
    http://www.seaeagle.com/FoldCat.aspx
But I just can’t quite pull the trigger.
I really don’t want anything inflatable and the price seems a little extreme.
I already have a small trolling motor over here. Just need to find sometthing small to put it on.

  9. Steve says:

Nice going Rob and Mrs Rob

Glad you enjoyed the boat. I was out in my portabote on Saturday (no wind) and Sunday (lots of wind)….. lol

  10. Rob says:

    Thanks Steve.

Well, we enjoyed the fishing part of it anyway. The jury is still out on the boat however. Since this was my first time out on the water in it I’ll reserve final judgement for later on, but that first launch was pretty much a pain. In fairness, part of that was due to the type of vehicle I drive, but the boat itself is totally different than anything I’ve experienced before too, and is just going to take some time to get used to I guess.

Hunter, that thing looks pretty cool. I’ve seen several Koreans out on the river in a similar one-man version, but have no idea how much they are or where they bought them from. They seem to be pretty stable though, and scoot across the water quite nicely with just a trolling motor.

  11. Steve says:

You don’t like the boat ??

  12. Rob says:

I wouldn’t say that I don’t like it, but yes, there are some things that I don’t like about it, but there are also some things that I do like about it as well. I’ll do a post on the pros and cons after three or four trips out.

  13. Steve says:

I suppose it will take a bit of getting use to if you are used to fishing from those big rigs back home.
Other than one fly fishing tournament in the UK in a wooden boat, my portabote was the first boat I’ve ever really fished from or owned.
Adding a wooden floor makes a HUGE difference to the stability of these boats.

Look forward to your report, I may be able to help you with the cons

  14. Rob says:

Actually, I’m used to “walking the shoreline,” so in that respect the portaboat is great! :)

I agree. A wooden floor would help tremendously, but then again that’s just something else to carry along. Again, a lot of it is my vehicle. If I had something bigger it would probably be better. My wife said that I looked like a “junk dealer” heading down the road Saturday morning. LOL

By the way, if you want to help out with the “cons” of the portaboat, how about buying me a 21′ Skeeter? Something like this should work just fine!! :) :)

    Skeeter Boat

  15. Steve says:

 nice looking Skeeter. I work with a guy from Texas and his older brother has just bought a 21 foot Skeeter but only with a 200hp motor, not the 250hp.

    [insert a drooling smilie here]

BTW, if I could afford to buy one of those I’d be at Andong everyday

  16. Rob says:

    LOL Steve.

If I could afford one I wouldn’t be in Korea, period! That particular one is a 2006 model and is listed for $39,000.00.

  17. Tex Mex says:

    Rob,

Nice fish. I’ll be heading down to Pyongtaek this Saturady morning to hit the area. A friend of mine down there said he knew some places to take me so we’ll see if we can do as good as you all have been doing.

  18. Rob says:

Tex Mex, I have to study this weekend  but will be out there the following week / weekend on Thursday, Friday and Saturday. If you can break away come on down…

  19. Steve says:

Thursday and Friday 27th and 28th fishing on the river ??

  20. Rob says:

Steve, more like Thursday afternoon, Friday and Saturday because I have to take a test Thursday morning… Are you thinking about coming up?

  21. Steve says:

Was thinking about it, then remembered it’s my daughter’s 3rd birthday on the 27th. I fly back to Nigeria on the 30th.
Think I’ll have to leave it until May, it’s a long way to drive just for Friday fishing !!!!

  22. TexMex says:

Wish I had a place to go to straight from work, other than the HAN RIVER. That was one of the good things about the Pyongtaek area. I used to do the same thing as you all did when I was there three years ago; take off during luch and go fishing. Last year when I went there, the river had changed and many of the places I hit were gone through building and other developments.

  23. Nomad says:

    TexMex,

Yeah, the areas around the river have changed a lot, most of them for the worse (IMHO). Construction everywhere and dredging, plus they’ve put in levees and breeding channels for carp, which makes walking the shore hard – and you have to put up with the carp fishermen, not to mention the other bass fishermen. Just a few years ago, I could go out there on a weekday just about anywhere along the river and be the only one fishing for bass; those days are long gone.
Speaking of the Han river, have you tried it? I’ve heard that depending on the area, there’s good fishing but I think that’s a ways out of Seoul and not within “lunchtime” limits.

  24. Rob says:

Yup, the old river sure has changed all right.
