A Porta-boat day on the river

Today, Rob and I went out in his Porta-boat on the Pyongtaek river and had a great day.  The weather cooperated nicely; for most of the day there was little or no wind and the temperature was quite pleasant once the sun rose and warmed things up.

The bass however, were just a bit on the finicky side though as the day progressed.  We caught most of ours early on, shortly after first light, and then just a few here and there throughout the rest of the day.

The above bass was my first and biggest of the day, the rest were all smaller fish, all caught on (you guessed it) black, four-inch Senkos.  I tried other colors and sizes throughout the day, but had no takers.

Above are just some of the bass Rob caught on five-inch Senkos, fished both wacky-rigged and weightless.  I’m going to have to try fishing the wacky rig next time out because the fish were definitely going for that and Rob had many more bites and caught more fish than I did.  Or, it could also mean that Rob is a better fisherman than I am ;)

This pic was taken around 10 this morning and you can see how calm the water was at that point.  All in all, a heck of a day and I had a blast cruising up and down the river – sure beats having to fight the crowds on shore!  Rob was right though, there are a lot more boats out on the river these days and we saw several very nice full-sized and decked-out bass boats today.  And in my opinion, that Porta-boat is great.  Sure, it’s no Tracker, but it moved along nicely and I found fishing from it to be very comfortable – and we got in a good eight hours of fishing.  It was also relatively easy to set up and tear down.  As I said, a good day and I can’t wait to do it again  :)

    Frank,

This answers my question – you did go fishing today. I agree, today was an excellent day to be on the river. My boat – http://www.tackletour.com/reviewsefoldcat.html – should be here sometime in mid-May. I will see you on the river.

    Khalil,
I’ve been eyeballing those things for over a year now, but the price tag with shipping here to Korea just appeared too high. You’ll have to let us know how it does.

Good job Rob and Nomad (insert clapping smilie here)!!!

You 2 guys are making me soooo jealous….I knew I shouldn’t of looked here until I got home  Only jokin’, I’m glad you got on the water and had a good day, boating gives you so many more options.

Hopefully the weather will be nice in May when I come up and fish the river for a couple of days!!

Hunter and Khalil, these guys are located nearby (Incheon I think) and have their own line of inflatables, and they also sell Sea Eagles: Zebec. There’s also a place down in Choenan, which is not too far from here, that sells both regular boats and inflatables: Marine Land (check out their Nitro and Bass Tracker prices, OUCH!!!). Gary bought his boat from Zebec by they way.

I still don’t care much for the ‘ol porta-boat, but that probably has more to do with my own laziness and Bass Tracker, Nitro, Skeeter and Ranger envy than anything else. lol I can tell you this much, having two grown adults there to put it together and take it apart did make a big difference. Thanks Nomad!!!

In all seriousness, had I known last winter that they were going to install a boat ramp that you could launch $50,000 ^ boats from out at the river I would have looked into some sort of small John boat that I could pull on a trailer. Hindsight is 20/20….

And by the way, if anyone wants to see just how far Koreans have come in the boating and bass fishing departments, head on out to the river next Sunday. KB is having a tournament out there and some of those guys have some really really nice boats. Nomad and I saw several of them out there today scooting up and down the river in their Nitros, Skeeters and Bass Trackers. And again Hunter and Khalil, some of those guys have some really nice one-man inflatables, “with” stand-up fishing decks on them already. I don’t know where they get them, but they scoot up and down the river very well, and look comfortable as hell to fish from. Zebec may carry them, I don’t really know.

    Khalil,

Come on out and join the party :)

Did you also order yourself a trolling motor and anchor? Both are must-haves out there, especially the anchor on even a slightly windy day.

  6. Rob says:

Khalil, cancel that order and buy my porta-boat!!! :)

By the way Nomad, the first picture in your post doesn’t do that fish much justice for some reason. That was a very nice fish, but in the pic it looks kind of long and skinny.

    Rob,

I noticed that about the fish. The only thing I could think of was maybe the angle you were holding it? I don’t know, because it sure does look a lot smaller in the pic than it really was. I thought it was around three pounds, but you wouldn’t think so judging by that picture. LOL No biggie, my friend. It sure did give me one hell of a fight though, didn’t it?

It gave you a hell of a fight, and me scars on my hand from removing the hook from its gullet! My whole fist was in its mouth, so it was definitely a decent bass.
