Rob and I took the boat out on the river today and 15 is the number of bass we caught and although that’s not bad, we had to fish hard for those 15. The day started out great and we caught several (6, I think – Rob can correct me on that) fish in the first spot we started out at but around 8 or so, the bass started turning off. I don’t know if it was the bright sun, the warm day, the warm water temperature (the water was in the 70’s in most places we checked) or if a lot of the bass have moved to their spawning grounds already.
Above are the only three pictures I took all day; I honestly thought I took more than that but three is all I had in the camera. Today’s fish ranged from small dinks up to a couple over three pounds and again, all were caught in or against the weeds/reeds on Senkos fished wacky-rigged and also fished weightless, in various colors. One thing, the weather was simply beautiful out there today, with no wind at all until right around 5 when we were calling it quits. Another good day in the books.
Nice job guys, yesterday was indeed another glorious day. Not only did I have my daughter, but my 6 y/o nephew in tow as well, so bass fishing was out. I needed something with lots of excitement, so we went to Sangjiland for some nice catch and release trout and we really tore them up. In about 3 hours we caught about 30 rainbow trout all in the 2-3 pound range. I even was able to land a nice fat 4 pounder. The kids had a blast and that’s all that matters. You can see pix at the reports section of my website.
Thanks Dave. Soulds like you guys had a good time as well. Where is Sangjiland? Is that the lake in Wongok? By the way, have you heard anything about how the bluegill are biting at either Idong or the small lake on 82?
The bass bite out on the river has definitely slowed down. We caught some fish yesterday but it was rough going for the most part. The same pattern held though, found a lot of them, and definitely the bigger ones, clinging to shallow grassy areas once again. The water temperature has gone up about ten degrees in a week, which is amazing. Last week it was in the high 50’s. Yesterday we found water that was in the low 70’s already. The spawn is upon us, on the river anyway…
“Hard 15″…..LOL Nomad (I guess I just have a dirty mind!!)
Any day on the water is great, and to catch 15 Bass with not perfect bassin’ weather is a job well done.

I’m guessing that the spawn is well underway, if not almost finished, and with there no wind the bass may of been more shy. If there had been a little wind with a little ripple on the water then it could of been a different story….that’s my theory and I’m sticking to it
See you guys soon for some fishing.
By the way, is it possible to launch boats into Idong lake?? If so we could hit the river one day and then Idong the next
Rob, it should be just the right time now for bluegill at both locations, I haven’t been to either in about a month. Next good rain we get, I will be out at night with a flashlight looking for night crawlers.

Catch and release only on the trout
Dave
Dave,
Thank you sir, it was another excellent day of fishing but then, aren’t they all? I’m glad to hear you guys had a fun time out there slaying the trout and as you said, the bluegill should be ready to go, if they’re not already.
Rob,
We were fishing the wrong side of the river
Steve,
Perv!
I agree, 15 bass is still a good day’s fishing. And both Rob and I lost good bass out there due to line breakage. They are still there, you just have to put more effort into catching them than before. And to answer your question about Idong, from what I know, they only allow boats out there during tournaments although I have seen private boats on that lake on non-tournament days.
Go for it guys!
They’ll never catch you in your port-a-boats!!
I was looking back at last years pictures and I was really slaughtering the bluegill on May 5 and that was toward the end of the bite. I remember that about 2 weeks later we could barely even catch enough for a meal. Maybe this week I’ll go for some gills after work.
Dave,
A few years ago in the heat of summer, I walked the shore with an ultralight rig and a 1/16 oz. white rooster tail and caught over 60 nice bluegill (all catch and release) in a matter of an hour or so. Matter of fact, I was having so much fun that I didn’t even fish for bass that day. That lake is full of them, but the problem is finding where they are at at any given time.
I did some flyfishing for bluegill last year and was catching some good size and numbers of bluegill, and that was in the June and July time.
2006 was the same…my wife caught over 20 bluegill in a very short time while I was bass fishing, and the was at the end of June.
I might have to get the fly rod out when I get home
Nomad, I’d like to try fishing at Idong as I’ve heard you guys talk about it so much, we could maybe do some bank fishing there early in the morning and then go back to the river with the boats.
One interesting note from Saturday. I caught a bass that had another lure stuck in its throat, and it was a pretty big soft plastic lure at that.
Also, they seemed to be hitting the wacky rig more than the regular senko for some reason.
Rob,
We should have taken a picture of that one, that was something else. How old do you think that lure was?
Hard to say, but it looked pretty old to me.
