Knots!!!!

After reading Nomad’s bad news with his line breakages this morning, I thought I’d start this little topic. Below is a link to a great knot site.

What knots do you use for a particular lure/technique and lure/line. I’ll go first.

For Flourocarbon line I tie a clinch knot 100% of the time and I can’t remember the last time I broke off at the knot, even with old line.

For braided line 30lb and over I tie a trilene knot….but with braid below 30lb (I have 11lb braid on my spinning reel) I find that the knot tends to slip, so I tie the same trilene knot as above but add an extra turn/loop and this has worked very well.

Heh, I’ve had that site bookmarked for quite some time :) I’ve never used the improved clinch knot but I use the trilene and the palomar and both seem to work pretty good. I don’t always wet the knot before tightening though…I’ve read that not wetting the knot will also cause breakage.

I used to use that Trilene knot all the time but lost quite a few fish on it. Now I use the polamar and it seems to be a much better knot.

I always wet the knot when tying the clinch knot with flurocarbon, but yet another good thing with braid is that you need to wet the knot

I’ve used the clinch knot ever since I started fly fishing 15 years ago in the UK after I watched a video from the states (I think it was the best knot at that time).

I only use the palomar knot when I am drop shotting as this keeps the hook point in the right position.

I have seen another knot on You-tube that is supposed to be the best knot for flurocarbon. I tried it and it worked great. Flurocarbon seems to be a bit more sensitive to heat as the knot is pulled.

I can honestly say that I’ve had the same amount of line breakage with the trilene and palomar knots but again, I don’t always wet the knot, and on one of the rods I use for ‘Early Morning Bass’ fishing, I had some line that was over a year old. The worst knot (but the easiest and fastest to tie) is the simple clinch knot…I will not use that one anymore because I had a few instances where the knot just came undone with a fish on…
