The old college try

Friday morning, I headed out to the Pyeongtaek river around 9:30, hoping to get a little action.  I started out at one of my favorite spots, thinking that since it was the middle of the week, and winter to boot, I’d have it all to myself.  That was not to be, however, as there were six vehicles already parked there and each belonged to my arch-nemesis, the carp fishermen, who were taking up the entire shoreline with their spread of poles.    I found a little area to fish but after 15 minutes, two more cars showed up with more carp fishermen so I moved on down the road.

As you can see, it was a really nice day out and I saw three bass boats out there – these guys were fishing the island right across from the 2nd rest stop.  I hope they had better luck than I did because I must have walked a good 300-400 yards of shoreline, trying everything in my tackle bag, without a single bite to show for it.  I honestly didn’t mind though because yesterday was more about getting some fresh air, some peace and quiet and a little time on the water before winter really sets in.

The increase in fishermen that the river has seen the past few years is truly amazing. Wow!

Just think Rob…4 years ago the only bass fishermen out there in a boat, ever, were you and Joe in his River Queen. And back then, on any day of the week I could walk the shore and never run into another bass fisherman unless I was out there with a friend. The carp fishermen were out there, but back then they congregated mainly in certain areas and I knew where to go to avoid them, which wasn’t hard. My oh my, how things have changed. LOL, what’s next, river tours or swan boats like they have on the Han river? We’ve already seen jet skis and water skiing, so those can only be next.

Don’t know if we were the “only” ones out there bass fishing in a boat or not, but we didn’t have much company, that’s for sure.

This much is for certain: those days are gone for good.

At least you were able to get on the water Nomad. Have you been out since??
I’ll be home on December 18th and I know a great winter fishing spot, can’t wait

    Steve,

Nope, sure haven’t…it’s been either cold, rainy, (or both), or I’ve been working.

    Nomad,
I hope you can get out soon, the bass I have caught during the previous winter months always seem to be of a good size. Lipless crankbaits, jigs and shakey heads will be what I’ll be using this year.

I’ll be home in less than 2 weeks, so I hope it warms up a little, I need to go fishing!!!! My wife told me yesterday that it has been snowing on Geoje island, which is very rare.

    Steve,

I think the water temps down your way tend to stay warmer than up here…I’ve gone out a few times during the winter months but have only had a few bites, at least from shore – and the one bass I did catch last year was a dink.

You may be right about the water temps Nomad. With that said, the lakes down my way do get a covering of ice at some point, but the streams and rivers seem to stay ice free and that’s where I tend to fish the most during the winter months.
