A Better Day

I went back to the same lake on Saturday from where I caught my dink last week and had a much better day.  I also remember why I don’t like to fish on a weekend……there was at least 30 other bass fisherman (and fishergirls  ).

I tried almost everything in my tackle bag without a single bite, then I tried a drop shot rig with a 4″ cut tail worm covered with mega strike and started getting bites almost immediately. In 4 hours bank fishing I landed 11 bass and missed at least another 11 bites due to my own fault of not concentrating fully. I was also using my new drop shot rod and reel with 6lb fluro line.

Here a few pics…..the 3 rd photo was probably the biggest of the day at around 13 inches.

You’re tearing them up, Steve! Good to see you had another productive outing

  2. Steve says:

    Thanks Nomad,
Not sure if I will get out again this week as the temps have dropped way down again….but I want to get my little inflatable out in the stream to flip some jigs for some big bass.

  3. Steve says:

Oh and Nomad…..thanks for your help with my post and photos

  4. Nomad says:

No problem, Steve, always happy to help…glad you got it all figured out and working :)

Way to go Steve! I’ve never tried drop-shotting but have seen lots of guys tear them up with that rig. How far up from the sinker do you usually tie on your bait, or does it just depend on where you’re fishing?

I’m trying jigs for the first time this year, and also bought some soft swimbaits for Andong. Maybe I’ll give drop-shotting a try next year…

    Rob,

I think the standard is 12-18 inches…and in the areas we fish, it’s best to use a split shot weight at the end so if you get hung up, you can pull the weight off without losing the entire rig.

  7. Rob says:

Great advice Nomad! Thanks! Lord knows that I don’t need to donate any more lures and gear to that river!!! LOL

I would imagine that drop-shotting is a great rig for when the fish are suspended just off the bottom, especially since bass generally can’t see beneath them. I’ll have to give it a shot.

  8. Nomad says:

Drop shot rigs definitely work, and as Steve pointed out, when the bass are finicky, the lighter the line the better so that all the fish are seeing is the bait. It does take a bit of patience though, more than fishing Senkos….I’ve seen guys out there who leave their dropshot rig in place for minutes, pretty much like fishing a shakey head rig…just twitching the line every now and then.

  9. Steve says:

Yep, Nomad got it. Drop shotting is a great way to catch finicky bass, but it also mostly catches the smaller fish. I normally have 8~12 inches below the #2 size hook and tie a polamar knot making sure that the hook point is facing up and you will hook the bass in the top lip 9 times out of 10 and this part of the bass’s mouth is tough. If the point is facing down you may miss a lot of bites.
I can also use a light wire 1/0 EWG worm hook and rig the worms weedless to save a few extra snags and lost tackle. I also just started using a split shot as Nomad mentioned and it makes a big difference for the better. I get them from a local sea fishing store here in town.

On Saturday the bass were only biting when the rig was perfectly still, but on other days a wiggling action is needed.

  10. Rob says:

Interesting…thanks for the advice guys. I see a lot of Koreans out there drop shotting.

I’d also like to try that rig that you use Steve, the one where you rig a worm wacky style, but put a weight at one end. What is that one called again?

  11. Steve says:

That would be the Neko rig. These are the worms I use because they have a very nice scent and they float.

Use an o’ring about a 3rd of the way up the worm (near the bottom) and put the dropshot/octopus style hook through the o’ring and put a nail weight in the bottom. This is my favorite spring and fall rig.

  12. Rob says:

Thanks Steve. What size nail weight? I have some 1/16 oz ones, but am thinking that’s too small…

  13. Steve says:

Rob, if it’s shallow water I’m fishing or there is no wind then I will use the 1/16oz, otherwise I will go heavier.

    Here’s the hooks I use….

    and these o’rings….

    and these 1/8oz sinkers….

  14. Rob says:

And you just kind of jig it like a shaky head, or do you bounce it up off of the bottom?

Asks Rob the question man… :)

  15. Steve says:

 Rob the question man, have a look at the video at the bottom of this link….”Action #2″

    http://www.probasszone.co.kr/shop/goodalign/good_detail.php?goodcd=1168048983

I think there are also some videos of the Neko rig on You-Tube.

I like to cast it out, let it sink and deadstick it. It will stand up straight as it’s a floating worm. If that get’s no bites then a lift and drop action works or a twitching action like a shakey head works very good.

  16. Rob says:

    LOL Thanks again Steve…

  17. Steve says:

    You are welcome Rob….anytime

  18. Nomad says:

That rig looks pretty interesting, now I’m going to have to try it as well

Rob, got some extra nail weights I can borrow?

  19. Rob says:

Sure. I have plenty, and fear not because just about every tackle store I’ve ever been in over here has them too…. I always wondered what they were for. LOL

  20. Nomad says:

Well email me a couple! Or upload them to the ftp! LOL

  21. Tex Mex says:

    Steve,

You Da Man. You are starting off like Nomad did last year, your are tearing them up. They may be small ones but heck, it beats getting skunked or a day at home doing nothing but having to take the wife out shopping. I do got a questionas as I am an ignorant computer person. How in the hell do you guys get these smiley faces posted to your reply.

  22. Nomad says:

    Tex Mex,

You don’t see the selection of smiley faces across the top of the comment input form as you’re typing in your comment? All you have to do is click on one and it will automatically insert itself into the comment…

  23. Rob says:

Sometimes they take a while to show up, or at least they do on my pc.

  24. Steve says:

Thanks Tex Mex, I don’t mind catching the small ones at all  and anything is better than taking the wife shopping, unless the store has a fishing section

  25. Tex Mex says:

    Nomad,

When I click on them, I don’t get the smiley faces posted I instead get the words they mean posted. Here is an example of what I get when I click the last one :?:

  26. Tex Mex says:

OK, now I feel very stupid as I see it posted the smiley face after I submitted the post. Prior to submitting the post it shows the words only. This is why me and computers just don’t get along. If I had had several shots of soju I would have probably figured it out.
