I was tuna fishing again last night. Not as many in numbers as a few nights ago, but the size and quality were much better…..and the best news of all, NO ribbon fish!!
Here’s all that’s left of my rod…..

Started out using this 5″ topwater and caught one smaller one.

Here’s some of the fish I got last night, all caught on a heavy 38g lipless crankbait.

And here’s a shot of one of the ribbon fish we caught a few nights ago…

I know you always hear me complaining about working offshore for weeks and not been able to fish, well, I think I’ve just changed my mind.
First off, here’s a sunrise photo for Nomad

Then a few nights ago, the weather and sea became calm enough to let me throw out a few lures that I brought with me. I also brought a travel rod and reel…..more on that later. Here’s some fish pics.

The rod only lasted for a few fish before it decided it wasn’t strong enough. My Korean inspector hooked into a fish using my rod when it snapped into a few pieces.

All I have left is a 4 foot section with 2 line guides, so it still works in a fashion.

I took a trip to Singal to try to recreate a trip from a few years ago when I caught seven fish that weighed over 30 pounds. That was by far the best day I’ve ever had fishing so I was eager to hit the lake again. I was also itching to try out my new toy side imaging sonar from Humminbird. You’ve probably seen pictures in Bassmaster and other fishing magazines of the device, let’s just say the pictures are not exaggerated.
This is a zoom of a screen capture that shows bait and fish suspended over a depression.
This shows a school of fish on a breakline in shallow water.
Two fish in deeper water.
I’m amazed at the images and the technology packed into this unit. I need to gain a lot more experience reading and interpreting before I can start catching. I can’t wait to take it out on the Anseong river.

I could not pass up 60 degree morning temperatures, even if it is still mid-March so you know where I was to be found at 6 this morning
. I sure am glad I got my butt out of bed though – I caught two small (and I mean small) dinks, and then, much to my delight and surprise, I caught this – my first Big Momma of 2009:
I’m not so sure how accurate my scale is; I did measure the fish though and it was a tad over 18 1/2 inches (or 47 centimeters for you metric types). And, I caught all three fish on a 4-inch, black Senko, fished nice and slow. I also tried 5-inch Senkos and I threw a spinnerbait from time to time with no luck.

I’ve been pretty lazy lately in the posting department so I’m playing catch-up today with this post. In the last week or so, there have been a few days where we had nice weather and I was able to scoot out to the river during my lunch break; below are some of the fish I caught:

All were caught on black, 4-inch Senkos, fished slow, close to shore in the rocks and weeds. The last pic (kind of) shows the type area I’ve been targeting. So far, I haven’t had any luck using a crankbait or spinnerbait but I am throwing at least one or the other each time I go, just in case.

Seriously. I had been fishing for a couple of hours without the slightest hint of a bite, and had even fallen into the cold river water and gotten soaking wet from head to toe on my right side, but all that bad luck changed when Nomad decided to send me a text message on my cell phone. As soon as my cell phone started vibrating from the incoming message, I felt a “tap…tap…tap” on my line, and I set the hook. Thanks Nomad!
LOL It wasn’t a monster or anything, but hey, it was a fish. I’ll take it.
Other than it being cold and windy it was a beautiful morning out there, and I got to take in some awesome scenery too:

Yesterday was definitely my last chance for some fishing before I head to Angola at the end of this week
I got to the lake at lunchtime and the wind was blowing hard, it was cloudy and kinda cold. I managed to catch 10 bass in what I thought was no-so-good fishing conditions. The best technique was to cast spinnerbaits into the wind and drag them along the bottom at a fairly slow speed. Most of the bass were tight to the bank where the wind was blowing onto.
Here’s some pics of the biggest one!!

And another couple decent ones……

It was Saturday afternoon, it was warm, the sun was shining and the Mrs and I were bored. So I suggested we go fishing together for a couple of hours.
My motive was to offer her to come along, say no and then I could go alone, but she said she wanted to come along and use her new pink rod that I bought her. I wish she had said no, because she kicked my @$$ again. We both caught 1 bass each, but hers was bigger.
Here’s my dink…..
And here’s the wife’s slightly bigger dink, around 12 inches on her my rod and a 4” watermelon/red AlluringBaits senko copy and a split shot about 8 inches up from the hook.

All of the fishing pics on this site motivated me to get out there and give it a try today. I caught two and missed three, and even got to watch one swim up behind my fast-moving Basstrix minnow and slam it. That literally made my day because I watched the bass dart out from underneath a clump of weeds, swim past my minnow, circle around behind and then nail it. Unfortunately I missed the hook-set (probably because I was watching instead of feeling), but it was nonetheless pretty awesome to watch.
I caught both of these on a 5” baby bass colored Senko, and the bite on both of them was surprisingly hard.
Oh, something else that made my day was when I got cussed by a netter ajoshi for releasing a bass right in front of him. He was watching me fish while bailing water out of one of his boats, and when I caught and shortly afterward released the first bass of the day, I heard a rather loud “aaaeeeesshhh,” followed by some other unintelligible grumblings. I just smiled and kept on fishing.
I decided to try another spot down near Asan Bay in the afternoon, but it was so windy down there that I could barely cast my lure. I put up with that for about thirty minutes, and since the fish weren’t biting anyway I walked around for a bit, snapped a pic of these nets in preparation and then called it a day.
