Fishing with my bass club

I am a member of a bass club based in Ulsan (and I’m the only foreign member) and every month we have a get to together come tournament where the 3 biggest bass on the day wins a prize, nothing huge, but it’s fun.

Well, every spring we always fish at JangCheok Lake (Tex Mex knows the one!!) and we fished there yesterday. I fished out of my inflatable boat this year as the water levels are way too low to launch my portabote  :(

It was like summer out there, it was sunny and reached around the 80 degree mark with water tempatures at 65 degrees early morning and and 73 degrees in the heat of the day.

I took a photo of every fish I caught so that I could count them and I managed to catch 29 total. Most of them were 14 inches to 16 inches which needless to say was not big enough to win or even be in the top 3. The biggest caught was 18 inches by a guy fishing from the bank!!  As you’ll see from the photos, about 95% of the fish were caught on a Neko rig, but I did get a couple on a wacky senko and a hard jerk bait.

The fish were in post spawn phase, the water was crystal clear and I could see the old beds in about 4 feet of water. It was cool, this was the first bass beds I have ever seen, unfortunately all the big girls had already spawned out and gone…there’s always next year!!

Here’s some photos.

    Steve,

Even though you didn’t catch the biggest, you did catch a bunch out there. I love that place and the town it sits on. Man you are really making me Korea homesick. I’ll post some pictures of our latest trout trip to the South Platte river below Eleven Mile Reservoir soon. Nothing huge but my partner did lose a rainbow to the swift water that easily went about five pounds. The beauty of this place is what made it an awesome trip. And to think this place is less than an hours drive from my home.

Nice going Steve. 29 fish is 29 fish! :)

I can’t believe they’re post-spawn down there already. Wow! What a difference a few miles makes. The water temps up here are still in the 50′s, and I think it’ll be at least a couple more weeks before we see any spawning activity.

Seeing beds is awesome, isn’t it? The first time I saw them was down at Andong last year and it utterly amazed me.

Thanks guys. Tex Mex, looking forward to seeing your photos bud

Rob, it’s amazing the difference in temperatures. Even though it was a colder than normal winter, the temps have come up faster than normal also and this lake will be full over grown with weeds within a month or so….then it’ll be froggin’ season  I love this lake

I’ll have to get down there and join you some time Steve. It sounds really nice, plus you can teach me how to fish with top water frogs. I’ve never had much luck with them, but did have one explode on one last summer. Of course I reacted too soon and missed the hook set, but it was pretty exciting and I’d like to do more of it. Teach me master, teach me!!!! :)

LOL Rob  you are more than welcome down here anytime. This lake is just over a 3 hour drive South of you guys so I can meet you there anytime you like.

I think I’ll fish tomorrow at a pond near me (well, 1 hour away) and this will be ready for froggin’ in a few weeks. I just fish the frogs over or very close to the thickest weeds I can find……make sure you have a strong rod and hold on. The occasional snakehead makes an appearance also

Just got back home so am now just catching up with the blog. Post spawn already? Wow! As Rob said, the bass up here aren’t even in the shallows yet. Good job, Steve, that’s a mess of bass and it sounds like you had a blast. :)

  7. Steve says:

Thanks Nomad……so how was your first day back to the rat race

I just got out of the hospital today, can’t go back to work till at least Thursday (the doc said a week but there’s no way I can stay home doing nothing that long).

    Steve,
Looks like you experienced one of those days when you can have fun all day long. Great job. In the first pic of the front of the boat, did you make a deck for the bow?

  10. Steve says:

John, you are right it was one of those days, but this lake has days like that everyday every spring!!

That little deck…..yes, I made it my self. I had some left over plywood and carpet from my other boat. It’s great for that tackle box and the anchor pulley on the front.

Hey, we will be coming to Korea in July to teach and I am interested in learning more about fishing clubs there. Where can I find out more?

    Thanks! :)

  12. Steve says:

Eric, what part of Korea will you be coming to?
