Mid-week Madness

It was Wednesday and the weather forecast was good, so I went fishing (I probably would of gone if the forecast had been bad)….lol

I started at one small lake at 6:00am and fished for about 45 minutes without any sign of a fish, and then all of a sudden the bass started to feed. I could see the bass chasing small bait fish all over this lake. It was great to watch these little baitfish jumping out of the water trying to escape from the bass with the bass in hot pursuit. I tied on several topwater lures to try and immitate the fleeing baitfish, but they would bite anything I tried. Then I remembered about a rig that I hadn’t tried before a “Donkey Rig” or “double fluke rig” as it is also known. Here’s a quick drawing of the rig.

I was fishing this rig right under the surface and the bass would slam this rig. I caught 37 bass on the day with about 30 of them coming on this rig. Unfortunately, I never hooked 2 bass at the same time….that would of been fun  :)

OK, here some fishy pics…

And of course there was the dinks, this one could of fit inside the palm of my hand

Congrats on the catches, and interesting rig. Do you make one longer than the other?

Nice going, Steve! You definitely are a man of many rigs

    Thanks guys

    Rob,
As I tried to show on my drawing, the leader that slides up and down the main line is the longest one. You’ll be surprised how this rig virtually never tangles up with itself. I used a 30 inch leader to slide on the main line, and the leader that is attached to the main line was about 18 inches, so that there is about 12 inches between the 2 flukes. I had a fish hit at the front fluke and miss it, but then it took the second one as it came passed. Great rig to try when the fish are biting like they were this day.

    Nomad,
There are days when one rig works for me, then the next day the very same rig doesn’t get a bite. I keep buying new rods and reels so that I can have a rod for every rig I use

Thanks Steve. I’m curious though, were most of your catches on the leader or trailer? I’m hesitant to try it up here in the river because instead of losing one lure to the nets and rocks I’ll lose two. LOL

I can definitely see it working though. Thanks for the info…

Rob, I know what you mean now about the snags in that river

I would say that 75% of the fish came on the front bait and 25% on the trailer bait.

  6. Rob says:

So I take it that you lost a few lures while you were up here Steve?

  7. Steve says:

Just 1 or 2 Rob  but I don’t mind losing a few lures, it’s a good excuse to buy lot’s more

  8. Rob says:

Oh yea, it’s all part of of the game Steve. I don’t usually mind either, but when those $5 crankbaits and other expensive lures get hung up out there, it stings just a tad. I’m sure I’ve wasted a lot more money on less wholesome exploits like wine women and song before though, so it’s all good. ;)
