Mixing It Up

As some of you know, most of last year I fished in one spot and had some great luck not only during the spring, but all through the summer as well.  For whatever reason, that area hasn’t produced this year except for the occasional decent bass along with lots of dinks.  I keep going back there, hoping that sooner or later the bass will move back into that area but it hasn’t happened yet, to include this morning.  After 30 minutes and 4 dinks, I packed it in and moved down the road to another spot.  Within the first 5 minutes, I caught 2 more dinks and then had a fish break my 6-pound test line (I had to change reels the other day because my regular one started binding up and this one still has 6-pound test which I’m going to change tonight).

Shortly after that, I caught the above on a 4-inch, black Senko.  With about 30 minutes remaining, I switched to a spinnerbait so I could practice some more with my baitcaster reel.

30Apr09_0002 I like catching fish on just about anything, but there’s just something special about catching a bass on a spinnerbait – especially for someone like me who hasn’t used them all that much.  As most of you know, there is one drawback to spinnerbaits, which I experienced again this morning when another bass hit but jumped and threw the lure.  I’ve read that a trailer hook will help with that but I don’t know if I want to add another hook which will increase my chances of getting snagged.  I’ve already donated enough lures to that river.

    Nice going.
Unfortunately, the forecast says rain this Saturday and Sunday. I hope they are wrong but cloudy conditions sure would be nice.

    Mike,

I’m glad I moved instead of being stubborn, hoping the fish were going to come to me…right now KMA is calling for cloudy skies Saturday morning but with a bit of wind…

I know that fish attractant you put on use is pretty good stuff Nomad, but did you really expect the fish to come to you? ;)

Well, last year they sure did…90% of my fishing last year was done from one spot, and by one spot I don’t mean one area, but one spot and I rarely moved 3 feet in either direction. For some reason, the bass aren’t coming into that area this year.

Yea I know, and given the success you had there last year don’t blame you one bit for going back repeatedly.

We caught some nice fish at “that” spot last month Nomad

So how’s your baitcasting skills coming along Nomad??

  7. Nomad says:

    Steve,

That was probably the best day I’ve had at that spot so far this year.

Baitcasting skills: Getting better all the time and I haven’t had a backlash yet (knock on wood)…but then I’m mainly using heavy lures like 1/2 ounce spinnerbaits and chatterbaits with them – pretty hard to get a backlash with heavy lures. I plan on trying crankbaits and maybe even 5-inch Senkos pretty soon to see how I do.
