A couple of weeks ago I went fishing and posted a report called “Dink Day!!”. Well, this report is full of everything but dinks.
I took my boat to a lake I have never fished before called NaJu Lake in GwangJu. The water levels we down so much that all known boat ramps were high and dry, but luckily I ran into some locals that showed me a secret ramp (if that’s what you can call it)…but that’s another story.
I haven’t counted all my photos yet, but I’m guessing I caught around 30 bass and only 2 of them were under 40cm / 16 inches. I also caught 4 or 5 big bluegills on several bass lures.
The early morning bite was topwater stick baits. Then after 9:00am the topwater bite stopped and spinnerbaits and cranks baits were the order of the day.
Bluegills first…
Now for the bass photos.
And I saved the biggest for last… 51cm and 4lb 6oz. The spot where I caught this one was a shallow flat area of around 5~7 foot where I also caught several other big females with red tails. I guess these were very late spawners and the water temps were around 77f and 78f.
No sun rise pics, but he is a sun setting pic I got on my way home…
Nice going Steve!!!!

If I had to guess, I’d say that you’ll be going back again sometime soon.
Hopefully I’ll have a report or two for you guys after I get back from the states…haven’t fished much at all this year, and haven’t been out in over a month. Ack!
Wow! Damn Steve, those are some huge bluegill
And the bass ain’t shabby either
I take it that lake doesn’t get too much pressure?
Thanks guys.

Rob, I definately would be going again soon, but with the water levels the way they are, I think I’ll wait. The area I used to launch was a bit precarious, I actually got my boat and car stuck at one point.
Nomad, as far as I know, when the water water levels are up, this lake does get some pressure and from big bass boats. I have seen it in the Korean lure fishing magazine several times.
Nice gills steve. Pound for pound I don’t think there is anything better (fight wise or table fare). Our tackle would be hurtin if they got real big.
Thanks hunterdave99.
I think the bluegills are much more aggressive than bass also. I must of had at least 100 bites on my bass lures from bluegill. I could see 2 or 3 bluegill following my lures back to my boat. I wish now that I had taken my flyfishing tackle with me.
Steve,
I’d be hitting that lake with my ultralight rig with 4-pound test and a mess of white 1/16 oz. rooster tails
I love catching bluegills…IMO, they put bass to shame when it comes to fighting. Yeah, imagine if they got to be 2-3 pounds or more
Nomad, I believe the world record gill is over 5 pounds. That would put a hurting on a Snoopy rod for sure. I have caught 2 to 2.5 pounders in Illinois farm ponds. When they get that big it can be tuff to turn them on ultralight tackle. They always want to swim perpindicular to you and can get tangled up in brush very easily.
A 5 pound bluegill
now that would be some fun right there.
Nomad, like I said, my fly rod would of been great that day. I have caught some decent sized bluegills on my fly rod before and it is great fun.
