Tough Tuesday

Man it was tough out there this morning.  I had one bite on a 5-inch motor oil with red flakes colored Senko while it was still dark, but when I set the hook, my 30-pound braid broke/cut.  30-pound braid, and I just tied a new hook on last night so there were no cuts or nicks in the line.  I have no idea how that happened, but sure enough, the line gave way at hook set.  The only thing I can think is that it was a snakehead…

As soon as it started getting light, I started throwing spinnerbaits and Karu Lures Vibraspins and you can see the result over on the left.  That was the only fish I caught this morning, once the sun rose and I figured that was it for the morning, I headed on base to wash my car, which had about 2 pounds of bugs on the front of it from driving along river road.

30 pound braid broke/cut!!! Ack! With that river though, there’s just no telling what did it…

  2. Nomad says:

If I hadn’t cut off about a foot of line last night while putting a new hook on, I could see weak/frayed line. Man, when I set the hook, there was no resistenace at all…it was like I had pulled the line against a sharp knife (or some teeth  ). And that line is tough….I dread getting snagged out there with it because there’s no breaking off, it’s cut the line or bend the hooks ;-)

  3. wilsong says:

Gentlemen, not a comment but two questions. Is braid better to use on a baitcaster either before or after you learn how to use one? And what are good knots to use with braided line?

  4. wilsong says:

Beautiful bass by the way.

The fishing was pretty rough on Andong too this last weekend. Tho for me it was better than usual.

  5. Nomad says:

    Wilsong,

I haven’t put braid on a baitcaster yet but from what I read, it’s better to go with heavy braid because lighter braid tends to dig into itself which causes it to “get stuck” so it won’t cast out until you pull it off the spool and reel back in again – if that makes sense. As far as braid’s properties when it comes to backlashes, I don’t know…I’ve only had mono and fluoro on my baitcasters. As for the knots, I use a palomar knot which has worked fine so far.

  6. Kingpin says:

Palomar for all occasions! Proven to be the best knot. I have heard that you have to read which baitcasters are made for braid. Not all are. As far as setting the hook and feeling nothing???? Snakehead gets my vote. I’ve done it a few times and almost hurt myself!I use 30 pound braid also.

  7. hunterdave99 says:

I think you got cut off on an old mattress frame or deserted shopping cart or something.

  8. Nomad says:

With all the crap in that river, it wouldn’t surprise me one bit ;-)

  9. Kingpin says:

Did you lick the knot like the pros? Maybe it got burned when you tightened it and you weakened it to the point that you broke it when that blue gill hit it……or a snakehead.

  10. Steve says:

Nice looking bass Nomad…I’m homesick already

When tying the knot with braid it is actually better NOT to wet the line when tightening (can’t remember the reason why though  )

The lighter sized braid knots have the tendancy to slip. I use the trilene knot only for braid and with 30lb or less I always add an extra turn in the knot to stop it slipping.

    Wilson,
As Nomad mentioned, it’s better to use heavier braids on baitcasters (the lightest I have on a BC is 50lb). A bird’s nest can easily be removed with heavier braid and there’s no need to worry about kinks in the braid after an over-run.
As I already mentioned, I use the trilene knot in my braid only and cannot ever remember having a knot failure.

  11. Nomad says:

Hmmm I’ll have to check out the trilene knot, thanks Steve.

  12. Wilsong says:

So >30lb test braid it is. Thanks, Steve.

  13. Kingpin says:

It’s probably not better to tell people a bluegill broke your line!

  14. hunterdave99 says:

Don’t the pros just add a touch of superglue to their knots?

  15. Nomad says:

    Kingpin,

WTF are you talking about? :| Actually, I’d love to get into a mess of big bluegill and yes, I have had bluegill break 4-pound test line before but that was before Idong turned for the worse.

    Steve,

Thanks, I’ll try that knot next time I go out…maybe the knot did slip on me because the line didn’t feel like it snapped, it just gave way…very possible. I did some research and yes, braid does have a tendency to slip.

    Dave,

The superglue is something else I came across while doing some reading. Not sure if I want to mess with superglue in the dark though, I might glue my fingers together

  16. Steve says:

LOL on the finger glueing comment Nomad, I can just picture it in my head

  17. Kingpin says:

WTF am I talking about? It’s a joke! You want to bash me over a joke? Go ahead. If you would have read everything I wrote….I agreed that it was probably a snakehead.

  18. Nomad says:

I did read everything you wrote and no one is bashing anyone. I figured you were joking but since I don’t know you, I wasn’t sure if you were being sarcastic or if you were joking around ;)

  19. Tex Mex says:

Does anyone know how the international tournament at Andong went, if any Americans placed, and winnng weight. Someone told me the fishing was hard because they released water the night before, which effected the fishing. The same thing happened last year but we all still smoked the fish.

  20. Kingpin says:

Nomad…the only reason you don’t know me is by choice. I have been blogging with you for years. Go back and look at your old website. Do I have to be in your click to take part in the conversation?
A little hint….I was the one that told you that you were getting to political to enjoy your website.

  21. Nomad says:

    Tex Mex,

Rob checked their site before he left but I don’t remember any of the details…he’ll be back from vacation in about a week or maybe if he checks in here he’ll answer your question. He’s busy tearing them up at Lake Barkley right now :)

    Kingpin,

No cliques here at all; anyone is more than welcome to partake and even better, share their fishing experiences. As for the old website, as you know it’s been down for a few years now…

  22. Wilsong says:

I participated in the Idong tournament. Don’t know about the dam but the fishing was hard. Pro winner was a Korean lady with 8+kg of bass. I can’t access the KSA site from here or would give you the exact no she placed with. 5th Place went to a Pro with about 6550g more or less. My KSA partner was big on using baby bush hawgs on neko or carolina rigging.

Only one amateur actually placed with his partner. A Chinese visitor place 2d with his Pro at 7+kg. I got to watch some of their fishing, Mr Choi(the Pro) was caught at least 3 fish in the afternoon using a rattling lipless crankbait. One was about a 3 pounder.

None of the American KSA pro’s placed. I know there was at least 1 there maybe two with their own boats.

KSA pushed amateurs from the lower places into winning spots also to give away the prizes.

If you want I can look at the rankings again and get more detailed info.

  23. Rob says:

    Tex,

An American named Greg Wilson came in 1st with the Korean lady, and the next closest American was our (Landing Lunkers) very own John Patrella. He and his Korean Pro partner came in 11th.

  24. Nomad says:

Greg Wilson? Wilsong? Coincidence? Is someone being very humble here? ;-)

  25. Rob says:

Here are the official results from the KSA web site. It’s kind of hard to make sense of though. Some names appear more than once. Wilsong, have any idea what that’s about? I did my best at translating the names, when and where I saw them.

Kingpin, there is absolutely no click here. Heck, for the longest time I thought Nomad, Hunter Dave, Steve, The Original, Tex Mex and I were the only ones who even looked at this site, and we all barely know each other. More recently, you and Wilsong have shown up, which is great as far as I’m concerned.

And oh yea, some guy named Ty shows up from time to time too. ;-)

I take it that you used to post as Another Basser?

  27. Tex Mex says:

    Thanks for the info guys,

Rob: I was just in Union, Kentucky for the past week and just got back yesterday to Colorado. I wish I had taken my fishing stuff as there were some nice areas to fish but the wife would not allow this. It was a family vacation and fishing was not in the plan, as the wife stated, go figure. The wife goes to Korea tommorrow for two weeks, so Party time, just kidding. I will however go camping with my youngest the same day she flies so I will be able to get some fishing in and a little beer drinking by the camp fire. Enjoy the rest of your stateside vacation.

Nomad/Rob: I was starting to get Chickenhead flashbacks. Anyways, what happened to Gar, did he go back to the states? I haven’t seen any posts from him.

  28. Rob says:

Tex, I live in Union County, but I take it that you were in the city of Union?

Gar is still around and is doing well. I’ll tell him you said hello the next time I run into him.

    Enjoy the vacation!!! ;)

KSA pushed amateurs from the lower places into winning spots also to give away the prizes.”

I include the quote from my previous entry to hopefully shorten my text here..

    Nomad

No coincidence but I am not being humble, I only placed 1st as an Amateur because of my Pro Mr. Kim, Chung Hui (Mr. Kim I hope I spelled your name right.) He gets all the credit, caught the bass that weighed in, and told me where to chunk my baits. A great guy. My big assist was operating the net.

As shown above we placed 7th overall. We had the weight to place 6th but took a 300g penalty for a sleepy bass at weigh in. We caught one other bass that might have pushed into 5th place but it was bleeding and Mr. Kim let it go rather than risk a 1kg penalty for a dead fish.

    Rob

Only one ProAm team placed in the top 5. That was no. 2 with Mr Choi and a Mr Lan (your Mr Ron) a Chinese national. The rest of us in 1, and 3-5 positions were moved up in the amateur categories to place with KSA members that fished without a partner. I can only speculate that Mr. Lan was not moved up to 1st place due to him not being able to take the first prize back to China with him. So I got that honor.

The third or 5th place winner was a Korean American soldier. The remaining guy I think was a Korean American civilian. Truth be known I was in a mild state of heat exhaustion due to walking up and down the steep banks twice to weigh the fish and to take my gear back to the car.

    Steve

I recently came into posession of a KSA Falcon inflatable boat about 9 foot long. Got any detailed pics of your inflatable so I can get some easy hints on how to set it up for fishing. Wonder if there is a tournament I can 1. Fish in and 2. win a trolling motor?

  30. Rob says:

Thanks for the clarification Wilsong, and congrats on scoring a boat!!!

  31. Nomad says:

    That’s what I need, a boat

  32. Wilsong says:

    Tex Mex

Just read your note again. I was the Andong tournament last year also and the fishing was easier. I caught my biggest bass ever then. Went about 4lbs.

  33. Wilsong says:

    Nomad

For the many years I have been here, I didn’t think there was any decent fishing to be had here. It was Angleretown, your old site, and one more that I can’t name that got me going again after about 20 years of limited fishing. Now if the ponds and rivers were just a little closer to my apartment.

  34. Nomad says:

    wilsong,

I got back here in 97 and I had no idea that there were bass or bluegill over here till sometime in 2003, when I saw a neighbor in the parking lot with his gear. I asked him if he was going carp fishing and he replied no, he was going to fish for bass and hopefully a mess of bluegill at Idong. He took me with him the next weekend and it was game on after that

  35. Steve says:

    Wilsong,
Congrats on possessing your new boat  If you would like, I can email you some photos of my inflatable boat. Send me a mail to bassinkorea@yahoo.com and I’ll reply to you with some photos.

  36. Wilsong says:

    Steve

You should have the email already along with some advertising photos of the boat.

    Nomad

Think I discovered the websites in 2006. Since then it has been refining equipment and learning. Growing up it was always bait fishing and then hit or miss trying to teach myself other forms.

  37. Rob says:

Wilsong, good idea on getting some tips from Steve on how to set up your boat. He definitely has both of his oufitted really well, and helped me a lot back when I had the porta boat too.

  38. Steve says:

You’re making me blush Rob
Wilsong, I got your email and replied, you could also checkout John inflatable boat set-up also ;-)

  39. Rob says:

Steve, the guy at the G. Loomis place over here commented on how well you have your boat set up too, so it’s kudos well deserved. You’re known the world over!!!!! ;)

  40. Steve says:

I’m speechless :| thanks for the Kudos ;-)

  41. Rob says:

Seriously man, you were a big help on mine. I didn’t have a clue when I first bought it.
