I took the family up to HwaCheon, GangWonDo for a long weekend to the ice festival. Man it was fun, cold, but fun. On the first morning there, Sunday, it was 5 degrees F.
The place was packed with people during the 3 days we were there and we had a hard time finding a spot to dig our 3 holes in the 10 inch thick ice. It wasn’t real fishing, everyone was using metal jigs with treble hooks and letting it sit on the bottom of the crystal clear, 8~10 foot deep water. When a poor trout swam by, they would rip these lures and hooks into the unsuspecting fish. It turned out that was the only way to catch a fish, so I joined in. Next time I will take some of my small trout flies and fish them on a drop shot style rig and try to catch them properly.
There are real people (somewhere) inside all those winter clothes.
My little girl with her first EVER fish.
Freshly caught lunch.
Looks “cold” Steve!
Thanks for the pics, and I’m glad that you and your family had a good time and found a way to enjoy the outdoors in the winter!!!
That does look cold! Only a couple more months and we’ll be back out there (or so I hope).
Rob – it was great fun, and even though the temperatures read VERY cold, it was actually quite warm when the sun was shining, I was very surprised. We will definately do this again next year, but I’ll be better prepared.
Nomad – I’m hoping it will only be a couple of weeks rather than months before everything melts and I can go fishing again.
Did you find a boat yet Nomad??
