Here’s what I’ve been doing to keep myself busy whilst waiting for the lakes to melt.
Here’s some more that I have just poured with painting to follow.

Wow, Steve, looking really good and professional! I sure do like those white/red spinnerbaits
One of these days I have to get off my @ass and give this a go…it sure would be a great way to stay in touch with an aspect of fishing during these cold winter months.
Thank you Nomad, let’s hope I can give the bass a few things/colors they have never seen before.
Once you get started making lures, there’s no limits to the unique shapes and color combinations you can make.
WOW!! These look really well made… Nice work mate.. If you dont mnd me asking, that bottom picture with the jigheads… what is that sticking out of the top of the head? I’ve never seen anything like it before…
tri,
If we’re talking about the same thing, those are bristles to make the hooks/jigs weedless…to keep them from getting snagged on weeds/wood/nets etc…
Yep, Nomad got it. That is a weedguard to help the jig come through cover without getting snagged.
I’ll be posting some more photos of them when they all painted up and complete
Nice job Steve. I pour a lot of my own sinkers as well. Mostly the big stuff for river catfishin of surf fishing, but I do have a couple of smaller molds for things like removeable split shot and the like. It is a fun hobby, and can save some bucks, especially the larger sinkers.
Never gotten into making lures. But I do plan on trying to make my own tuna poppers whe I get back to Texas. Those beasts are expensive to buy.
Thanks HunterDave. Do you make this stuff in Korea or back in the States?
Does anyone here know where I can buy powder paint here in Korea?? Using nail paint is OK, but it’s nowhere near as durable a powder paint.
Here’s the finished jigs;
I originally posted this in the wrong section (sorry). I wanted to post it here in the lure/gear post. Those do look nice good. What a good hobby. I bet it feels great when you catch a nice bass on one of your own lures.
I was curious if the gear being sold at the Seoul Fishing Expo is going to be over priced (given past experiences)? I was going to order a couple rods online from Cabelas, but wanted to ask before. Is there a certain Korean bran of rod that is just as good as a St Croix or something like that? I am sure you get my drift.
Thanks!!
Pat,
This is only my personal opinion; I’m sure there are some good rods/reels to be bought here, but I get all my stuff from the states (Bass Pro, Tackle Warehouse, Tackle Direct, Cabelas etc). And I have bought all my G. Loomis rods from this place, their prices are good and their service/shipping can’t be beat: http://www.gloomis.us/
Everyone’s mileage varies, but for some reason, whenever I order regular gear/tackle from Cabelas the package takes 4-6 weeks (sometimes longer!) to arrive so unless it’s something on sale or something I can’t get anywhere else, I order from another seller. Having said that, aside from the G. Loomis link above, all my other rods took 4-6 weeks due to package size and being sent parcel post; the G. Loomis place sends priority mail.
Pat – thanks for the comments on my lures!
For high-end Korean brand rods, I believe NS rods are about the most desirable rods made in Korea and although I have never owned or used them, I’ve heard lots of good things abot them.
For Korean brand rods, I use the Surecatch brand. Not high-end, but certainly great rods. I have owned several Surecatch Tournament XP rods for years and there are still going great.
I may try and attend the Seoul Expo this year, I’ve got money burning a hole in my pocket, lol.
Pat
The gloomis link Nomad posted is a great site. They ship fast and have some good deals. I bought two bait casting reels from them at what looked really good prices (if only I could throw them as good as the deal was [sigh!!!]). I have a Korean spinning rod I am really happy with. I will look at the name and add it to the list here.
I am working shifts when the Expo is here again this year. Let me know what good stuff they have if any of you guys go to it.
Mate, blackhole rods from ns rods as steve mentioned are great…
I’ve owned a blackhole medusa which is supposed to be used for bass for everything..
They feel really light and have a nice fast action, though its rated medium light I’ve landed big kingfish up to on it back in aus… You wont be disappointed… They do have alot of cheaper rods that feel pretty good as well.. You will find them at most tackle shops here i think…
Steve,
I did bring about 6 molds here with me and a small electric stove to melt with but I haven’t used them. The surf fishing and catfishing here is just not what I thought it would be. No need for the larger weights. I have 3 surf outfits here capable of taking up to medium sized sharks and a couple of catfish rigs able to haul a big flathead out of the thickest brush. In four years, my cheap bait rods are the only thing getting any action.
Oh well, at least I learned a new hobby and am totally addicted to snow skiing now.
I have to agree on the plugs for the G. Loomis store. Since it is near my hometown I’ve had the opportunity to personally visit the store and meet the people who work there, and they’re great. One of them even knew Steve from a message board. Talk about a small world!!!
