Tube Fishing

I finally got the opportunity to get out in my belly boat that I bought last winter. It definitely was a change of pace from fishing from a boat –mainly because my mode of propulsion was swim fins. Man what a workout! The saving grace was that I caught some decent fish.

I started out using a baby brush hog but I kept breaking the 6lb test line when setting the hook, guess I’m too used to using 65lb braid.

I switched to a flick shake worm on a jig head and never lost a fish after that. It was the first time I fished this stretch of the river and was pretty impressed with the quality of bass. The added bonus was that I was all alone, which is something to savor nowadays.

I relished my time out on the water, work has been far to hectic recently and I hope to get back out this weekend.

Where can you get one of those tubes?

I have two with gear for one of them and some extras. Never used them because never got my big butt small enough to meet max load with gear. Am planning on putting them on ebay.

How have you set up your belly boat? Any add ons to it?

That tube has to be perfect for those hard to get to and out of the way places. Hmmm, I wonder if the boat nazis would complain about a tube at Idong? And those are some nice bass, John!

Last time I was down at Idong checking it out somebody was watersking on it. What’s this about boat Nazis? Past experience?

    Wilsong,

They do have that waterski place near the dam, is that what you’re talking about? As for boat nazis, John tried taking his inflatable out on Idong a few years ago and the guy that comes around and charges you 5,000 won came out and threatened to call the police if John didn’t pack up and leave. I have heard that you can pay “someone” to take your boat out on the lake but have never been able to confirm that.

I see. Guess I have been lucky, never have bumped into the dollar otashe. Just as well I wouldn’t have understood any threats made by him anyway.

I have stayed on north and east end up to now. Reconned the south end trying to find way up the west side but not tried to fish it. Maybe will try harder to get down to the weight for the larger belly boat.

    John,
I ordered the tube from Bass Pro Shops, I think it’s a White River – you can see it in their catalog or online. Price wasn’t too bad either. I did order a rod holder for it so I can fish with two poles, sure beats having to change lures all the time. One thing I found out on the first trip was that some sort of anchor is essential. The wind will blow you around like a ballon on the water and I spent a lot of energy trying to stay in one place.
Picked up a 5lb dumbbell from the PX, that should do it.
Idong sounds like an ideal lake for the tube. The east end where the creek crosses Hwy 45 in the flooded trees would be my next foray.

WGT john, that looks like a fun way to fish. I’ve often thought about buying one, I just never got around to it.

    Yes, nice fish John!

Wilsong, if you’re interested in selling one of your belly boats, please send me some pics and a price. I might be interested in buying one of them off of you.

I didn’t see anyone collecting money out at Idong last weekend while I was out there, but have been hit up for 5,000 Won in the past on a few occassions. And the ski boat guys stay up on the dam end of the lake, 20,000 Won for one turn if anyone is interested, talked to the owner last weekend, pretty nice guy.
