Boy Scout Fishing Derby

I got a chance to be the fishing instructor for a Boy Scout Fishing Derby held this Saturday at a local carp pond. I’d fished this pond before and knew it had lots of small bass – a perfect place to take kids fishing.

We had a good turnout of about 15 kids and parents. My friend Pete Hart, who is on the ProStaff for Rapala and fishes the professional KSA bass circuit, was in attendance and Rapala donated some very nice hats and lures for the kids. I was able to dig up two bags of tackle and together, awarded prizes for the most and largest fish.

Even the parents got involved and were able to catch fish.

Overall, it was a great day for the kids and parents and I think we were able to get some hooked on fishing. I relish the opportunity to teach youngsters how to appreciate nature and the outdoors and urge all fishermen to take the time to take a kid fishing.

That looks like an awesome day John. I always like to read about these kinds of day where the kids have a great time and catch a few fish!

Look at all those happy faces! Mark my words, at least one of those boys will be getting up at 3 am to get in some Early Morning Bass fishing before work when he grows up

Brandon, maybe the next one can be a combined boyscout / girlscout event. I know John and Pete wouldn’t mind.

Those girlscouts LOVE their little badges. I am sure they could figure out a badge for that one! It could be a Good possibility.

I think I had as good a time as the kids. What was really cool was three came down with their dad from Yongsan and I was showing the older, Isaac, how to work a wacky rigged worm. He had it right on the surface, shaking it and a bass acame up a grabbed it as we watched. Isaac jerked so hard it broke his line. As I was retieing, his younger brother Jimmy threw back to the same spot and caught it – it still had Isaac’s worm in it’s mouth. Talk about a great way to start a great day…

Wow that’s awesome. Must have been one hungry bass to get hooked and go right back for more! Watching kids catch fish is so awesome. They get almost excited as us “bigger kids” :)
