Saved by the Spinnerbait, Part II

If you live in Korea, then you know that it rained cats and dogs yesterday and last night, and I figured that all that rain turned the river to the color of chocolate milk – and yes, the water was pretty nasty out there this morning.  I had a theory, and as long-time readers of this blog know, most of the time my theories don’t pan out too well    – but for once my idea was spot on.  And that was to use a spinnerbait out there; not any spinnerbait, but one with a colorado blade in front of a willow blade for the additional noise/vibration.  In red/white, of course Open-mouthed

As you can see, the morning turned out a lot better than I thought it would, considering how muddy the water was.  And to think I almost stayed in bed!

Nice looking fish. Did you try any other spinnerbait colors?

  2. Nomad says:

    Wilsong,

Thanks, and nope, I stuck with what’s worked for me out there in the past but instead of double willow blades, I went with a colorado/willow combo this morning. But truth be told, as muddy as that water is, I probably could have gotten away with using any color.

    Nice catches Nomad

The ground there appears to be quite dry in the photos. I guess the rain stopped a little earlier up North than it did down here. It rained heavily all day here yesterday and it’s still dark and gloomy down this way this morning, with a few small showers.
I also checked the weather for the weekend (as I plan on having a full day of fun fishing in my inflatable boat), and it’s forecast for more of what we had yesterday

    Steve,

Don’t let the pics fool you…that parking lot was one muddy, slippery mess. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for some nice weather on the weekend for you :)

  5. Steve says:

Thanks Nomad, Sunday is still a long way away yet, hopefully the weather will change by then, it usually does.

Will you be taking the S.S. Netcutter out on Friday with it being a Korean National holiday??

  6. Nomad says:

    Steve,

I’m the only U.S. person in my section which means since my coworkers will be off Friday, I’ll be here, manning the fort.

  7. Steve says:

That sucks, but on the bright side, you won’t be the only one. I’ll be in all day also, and I get a day holiday for it ;-)

  8. Nomad says:

I may try to get in some EMB though, the spots shouldn’t be crowded yet at that time of the morning…or so I hope ;)

  9. Steve says:

Yeah right, the crap fisherman will be camped there on Thursday night until Sunday. Good luck Nomad

Ack! You just jinxed me! LOL

I was kinda thinking color wouldn’t matter but was looking for confirmation in those conditions.

    Wilsong,

I do believe color is important (although I still haven’t figured out the particulars, LOL) but yeah, as muddy as the river is right now, I think the fish were homing in on the sound and flash of the blades, that’s all. If I remember right, most people say to use darker colors in stained water and yellow or white colors in clearer waters. If I would have had more time this morning, I would have tried one of these Hildebrandt “Go Getters”, in black.

Heard the same about using dark for dark light or cloudy water. But (as I think I have mentioned before) I have only caught bass on a spinnerbait with black and yellow with a single colorado blade. So I tend to fish yellow and/or chartreuse with black.

Hpoe to vary those ideas when I start getting out again.

    Wilsong,

We do tend to stick with what’s worked in the past for us, eh? For me, the white/red combination has worked the best out in that river so that’s what I like to have tied on. I have a feeling that the water will still be just as muddy, if not worse, tomorrow morning so if I make it out there, I’ll tie on one of those black Go Getters and give it a chance. A Chatterbait type lure *should* work too, I would think, since they put out a lot of vibration/noise, but this morning I tried a Karu Vibraspin (http://www.karulures.com/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=20&Itemid=32) for about 30 minutes with no luck. Once I switched to the colorado/willow blade spinner, I started catching fish.

The vibraspin looks interesting. Adds the noise of maybe a jitterbug to the spinnerbait, ya think? Good luck.

Nice going Nomad, and I’ve also heard the same thing, dark colors for dark water, and light colors for clear water. I’ve never tried it with spinner or chatter baits, but it seems to work with Senkos and worms…

    Wilsong,

This morning I had the quadruple whammy; high water, muddy water, a very strong current and worst of all, a brisk wind right in my face. But, I tried some different colors and combinations of spinnerbaits: black with single black colorado blade, white/red with single colorado blade, red with dual willow blades, yellow with dual willow blades etc…and absolutely nothing. It wasn’t until I threw a senko for a bit and went back to the red/white colorado/willow combo that I ended up with fish but none of them went over a pound this morning. Those big single colorado blades sure do put out some thump though and I’ll have to try them again when the current and wind aren’t so strong. It was an interesting morning, trying different things and feeling how the various blades felt and acted.

  18. TY says:

WTG Nomad! That red/white is working good for you. I’ll have some different colors for you when I get back to Korea. i.e. yellow/white LOL

  19. Nomad says:

    Ty,

Sounds good! Enjoy your vacation and time with your family.

  20. Rob says:

Ty is out of the country? NOW is the time to go and catch some fish!!! ;-)

  21. TY says:

That’s right Rob! Hey, don’t catch them all though, I’ll be back in two weeks brother and ready to fish.

  22. Nomad says:

    Ty,

That battery will be all charged up and ready to go! ;-)
