I hit 3 ponds/lakes on Saturday morning before this rain storm hit home. With the cloudy skies, I decided to only throw buzzbaits all day (I say all day, but the rain came down very heavily at lunchtime, so I went home).
In total, I caught and landed 7 bass, had another 5 or 6 fall off the hook as I was lifting them out of the water and missed several other bites (I guess I should of used a trailer hook!!)
A lot of the bass were dinks, but here are the better ones.
Nice going with the buzzbaits, Steve! I have two goals this year; to catch a 5 pound bass and to catch something on topwater…gee, I wonder which of those is an easier feat?
During the course of any given year, most of the fish I catch on buzzbaits are better than average in size, so perhaps you could get both of you goals on one cast
Steve,
What’s the color you use most when it comes to buzzbaits? I think I only have white, yellow and black.
I don’t really think it matters much as it is totally a reaction strike. I’m still unsure what a buzzbait is supposed to imitate, but during low light, muddy water or dark conditions I prefer darker colors like in the pictures above.
I have had a lot of luck with chartruse and white coloured buzzbaits, so the colors you have sound ideal.
As an extra tip, I use buzzbaits with a clacker 90% of the time these days
WTF is a clacker?
Nomad, look at the buzzbait in the last photo. There is a small, triangular shaped piece of metal right next to the buzz blade, that’s a clacker. As the blade spins on the retrieve, the “clacker” hits the blade and makes an extra sound.
Oh ok, got it. Does something as noisy as a buzzbait need any additional noise though? Not that I’m an expert at top water fishing…
LOL Nice going Steve!!
Thanks Rob!
Nomad,
Try fishing a buzzbait a little slower so that the blades only JUST break the surface and they are much quieter. Yesterday I had to keep my rod tip real high and wind as slow as possible so that there was very little surface sound, but sometimes they like it fast and really churning the surface.
If it ever stops raining
, I’ll try to get over to Idong to give buzzbaits a try.
It has finally stopped raining down this way, but now we have gale force winds
Still misting up here but we have the winds as well. The fun never ends
The sun is actually shining right now, I’m sure it won’t last.
