Ty and I took the SS Netcutter out today despite KMA’s forecast for rain and strong winds. It’s a good thing we didn’t trust KMA because there was only a bit of wind and no rain at all.
The heady days of spring are behind us and now that summer is here, fishing is a whole new ball game. I love spring fishing but at times, it is a lot like shooting fish in a barrel. For the most part, you basically tie something on your line and go catch fish and if you’re having a hard time catching bass in spring, then you may as well hang it up
. Now summer is completely different and although we don’t catch the quantity we catch in spring, the fishing is just as much fun, if not more so because you have to figure out where the bass are, what they want, and how they want it. Without proper electronics, finding them is the hard part. We did find a few and ended up catching 12 today, the only ones that were pic-worthy were the three above. We tried everything, everywhere – crankbaits, spinnerbaits, buzzbaits, jigs and of course, wacky and Texas-rigged Senkos. Even though someone didn’t bring the sandwiches, which adversely affected my ability to fish (just kidding, Ty
), it was another great day out on the water. and I hope we get a few more in before it gets too miserable out there.
Get Her Done Nomad! Thanks for the change of mind Friday night and not going with the report that KMA had posted. It was a great day on the water! By the way after the commissary visit I ate two sandwiches. I’ll be more prepared for the next trip on the SS Netcutter. LOL Nice pics!
Ty,
I haven’t heard from Mike yet on how they did, I think they stayed out there pretty late. I also can’t wait to hear the reports from Andong…Steve, John and wilsong area all down there this weekend and I hope they catch some lunkers.
Well, umm, I saw some nice bass.
Good going guys, 12 is a good number at this time of year, believe me I know, lol.
I’ll post some Andong stuff a little later on.
wilsong,
Come on, it wasn’t that bad, was it?
Steve,
Thanks…we had a pretty good time trying to figure the fish out. I broke the mount for my fish finder on the trip before, so we were running blind as far as water depth, structure etc. So what we were doing was sticking our rods into the water and if we didn’t hit bottom, we were “deep” LOL We hope too get out again soon and maybe try some other areas.

Don’t get me wrong, had a great time. I was on a boat, eh? But nothing worked. My pro caught his first fish on his third cast. he caught 4 with two misses (one was on about 20 seconds and jumped out to say good bye about 15 seconds after he got off the hook).
I threw everything I had except topwater. I did wacky rig, octopus rig, drop shot, shaky worms, worm on a jig with a gold blade, I used 5″ swim senkos, 4″ and 5 ” Senkos, Jackall flick and shake worms, rhino worms, I used black, watermelon, motoroil with gold flake, green with red flake, green, I tossed creature bait, I use Cordell spot, Rattl’trap, green and brown spinnerbait, white and red booyah spinnerbait, I used gold spinnerbait (even did last 30 minutes with my all time favorite black and yellow spiinnerbait(, and I threw 4″ sold shiner and 5″ Sexy shad Tru Tungsten Swimbaits.
All I caught was a tree!
Once I got a tap tap on the octopus rig. Another time while fishing the gold shiner swimbait my pro said something and I looked at him. When I looked back my line had stretched out (nothing to feel), but when I struck it was gone. And another time with the sexy shad swimbait I was watching it come back to me (water was so clear even with rain) and notice a nice bass following it up to about 3 feet of the boat.
And thats all folks. Also got a really good farmers sunburn.
Oh, and I tried spinnerbait with and without trailer (worms and creatures).
wilsong,
Sounds like you threw everything except the kitchen sink! Summer time is tough like that though but as I wrote above in the post, I do enjoy the challenge…up to a point. There comes a time when you’re wondering, “what the heck do they want???” after throwing everything in your tackle box.
Ty and I plan on heading out again this Saturday (full moon
), armed with crankbaits, spinnerbaits, jigs and of course, senkos – I can’t wait. Since I started fishing from the SS Netcutter, I find that I don’t like fishing from shore like I used to…now I want to be out on the water, going from spot to spot. Imagine that

My pro was catching his bass with a dropshot rig with only about 4-6 inches from hook to the weight. The worm was either red, pinkish or an earth color about 3 inches long with a curly tail. I have some similar but didn’t bring them cuz I was fishing big water not a dinky stream or real small pond. Goes against the grain of what I usually hear about bigger is better for bass. But heard that another pro was doing similar.
Yes fishing from the water is more fun. Riding is easier than humping the bank. Hopefully soon I can get me a trolling motor set up and take mine out. Haven’t picked out a name for the ship yet. (Hmmmm, maybe the Minnow).
Color the pro caught two bass on was pumpkin. A dink little worm.
wilsong,
I’ve read that in summer, finesse fishing is the way to go, especially when the bass are being finicky. Hmmm…maybe I better add some shaky head and dropshot gear to the arsenal for the next trip out. My problem is that I don’t have the patience to fish finesse type baits.

You know none of the three Korean pros fished slowly and all used the drop shot rig heavily. It was cast and drag it back with various differences in the twitches and jerks.
In 08 the pro only used drop shot with 7″ pumpkin curly tail worm called a Dead Ringer. 09 the pro used a nondescript dark worm on drop shot and wacky again 6 to 7 inch. This year he tried a top water (looked Japanese plug in silver) as well but kept going back to his miniscule worm and short dropshot rig and catching.
Interesting…the few times I fished dropshot, I cast out and let it sit there, and shook the rod tip, trying to get a bite. LOL, and that didn’t last long at all
I’ll have to give that a shot if I go out this Saturday.
Nomad, the drop shot is a great technique that definately catches fish, but I usually only use it during the winter months.
I guess it’ll work well in the summer months also, so I should give it a try next time out also.
I always see the Korean fishermen using dropshot rigs during the summer months and I have tried it a few times but it was just too slow for me. At least the way they were doing it, which was casting out and then letting the worm pretty much sit in one place the entire time…just a shake of the rod tip every now and then. I start getting ants in my pants after sitting still for more than 3 minutes so that wasn’t for me
Nomad/Steve
The way I saw them using was more like an elevated carolina rig. They didn’t seem to let it sit still long at all. That could have been a function of the steep banks on Andong they were fishing. Get it into the area fish were holding let it sit a short time, twitch and if no bite slowly reel it in. Seemed always get bit on reeling in.
wilsong,
Something else to try!
