First frog bass of the year

The weather man was right for a change. Saturday’s forecast was calling for heavy rain showers, and that’s exactly what we got. I drove one hour to another new pond that I read about in the Lure and Fly magazine. I arrived at the pond at exactly 5:00am and that’s when the first heavy shower came, so I put on my rain suit and went for it. I caught 3 small bass on a black and blue buzzbait almost right away by casting it along the shoreline, the bass were holding really close in.

The as it got a little lighter, I could see around this new pond and I could see that there was a lot of floating slop in 2 corners of the pond, so I tied on one of my new Surecatch frogs (Mr Frog) and started running it across the surface of the slop, that’s when this nice bass decided he really wanted frog for breakfast and he hurled himself completely out of the water to get it, exciting stuff as this is my first frog bass of the year.

After that fish, the very heavy rain seemed to stop the fish biting so I moved to another spot where I caught a small bass on the frog before heading home extremely wet. I did have a few more hits on the frog which I either missed or the fish got off.

Steve, a couple of more hard core outings like that and you’ll be promoted to apprentice animal. LOL

I picked up my boat from Mr. Ski yesterday and hope to get on the water this weekend, and if I can find a place to throw a frog I’m going to try my best to finally catch one on a top water too. I’ve had them nail poppers and frogs in the past, but I have a hard time setting the hook, always end up jerking the bait out of their mouths. I’ve read where you have to wait and let them take the bait under the water, but when they explode on top of the water like that I think it’s instinctive to jerk the rod.

Nice going Steve!! And that’s a great video Nomad, looks like those guys were having a blast!!!!

    “Apprentice animal”, lol Rob.

Rob, I know what you mean about missing the hook sets on top water lures, I missed a bunch more fish on the frog on Saturday morning.

Nomad, get your rain suit on and catch those top water bass

Those are some pretty bass in not so pretty weather. Maybe it is just me but I have a hard time making a go of it when I am as wet or more wet than the fish.

    Steve,

I didn’t see it personally, but I was told by several people that the river was super high and nasty this weekend.

    Thanks Wilsong, and lol.

Nomad, it’s not surprising with all the rain we’ve been getting lately. However, this pond I fished on the weekend was rather clear, about 2 or 3 foot visibility (which is normal in these parts).

I can testify to the fact that the river was in pretty horrible shape over the weekend, muddy as hell with tree limbs floating around all over the place.

    LOL Wilsong…
