Friday the 13th Bass Fishing

I took yet another Friday off to do some fishing yesterday and had a great time.  It didn’t start out so great though.  The visibility on the water was extremely low due to dense fog and I started out the day by running the boat straight into a fishing net at full throttle.  Ack!  Then, shortly thereafter I got skunked at the first place I stopped to fish, which was at a place that has consistently produced bass for me in the past.  At that point I was thinking “way to waste a vacation day Rob.”  However, things quickly turned around and I had a great day.  I fished for 11 hours straight, and averaged a little better than 2 fish per hour on the day.  I caught all of them on numerous different colors of 5″ Senkos and 1/2 ounce Chatterbaits.  I didn’t take a whole lot of pictures mainly because I can’t seem to find my Sony Cybershot anywhere, but I didn’t catch any monsters either.  I caught five in the 2.5-3 pound range but all of the others were 1 to 2 pounds.  These pics were taken with my cell phone so the quality isn’t all that great, but here they are nonetheless.

Gary’s Smallie

With a little help from this 4.39 pound smallmouth bass, my brother-in-law won his local club tournament last weekend.  Nice fish Gary!

Weekend at Andong

Greetings all, and welcome back Nomad.  I had the opportunity to head down to Andong this past weekend with a great bunch of people and had a blast.  The weather, food, beer, company etc. were all great, and the fishing wasn’t half bad either.  I caught this little fella from the bank not more than twenty minutes after arriving.  I don’t know what it weighed, but it measured twenty inches.  She was the only bass I caught on Friday, but not a bad way to start out a weekend I say.

On Saturday, a friend and I went out in Ruben’s boat and did really well.  We caught approximately fifteen bass, most of which were in the 2-3 pound range, but four of ‘em were what I’d call really nice bass (for me anyway), and one of them was a personal best that measured 22 inches and weighed 4.9 pounds (first pic on left below).  The two pics to the right are of another good fish that I caught just across the lake from the campground early Saturday morning.  Actually, I think it may have been a tad bigger than the personal best one that I caught later on in the day, but at that time of the morning I was barely awake after having only slept for about two hours the night before and didn’t even think about weighing or measuring it.  Doh!  Plus I was slightly hungover, which also explains the lack of expression on my face in the pics (hurt’n for certain).  LOL

The best part of the weekend for me was on Sunday morning when we got into an area just loaded with beds though.  To me, that was just amazing.  It was a real treat to be able to see them bedding with my own eyes.  Although I did manage to catch one after about twenty minutes of dropping my bait on her nose, we left the rest of them alone to do their thing.  Still, it was just an awesome experience, one that I’ll remember for some time to come.  Great weekend…

John P. and Walt came in second in the tournament on Sunday by the way, weighed in an awesome bag of fish at a little over 22 pounds.  Basically, they had a bag full of my “personal best” fish.  WTF?  LOL  I’m sure that he’ll be making  a post later on.

Happy Birthday Nomad!

To one of the biggest ass holes finest people I know, Happy Birthday Nomad!!!  Here’s to better days my friend!  :)   :)

Fishing Gods smile down on Rob

I took the day off yesterday and had a great day out on the water.  In fact, it was the best day I’ve had fishing in many years.  What surprised me the most though was not the quantity of fish caught (well over 20), but the quality.  I’ve been fishing the Pyongtaek River for a good five years now and can’t remember another time where I caught so many nice sized, healthy bass in one day.  And sorry, once again I didn’t have a scale or tape measure with me so I don’t know what they weighed or measured.  I have a good idea, but since ideas aren’t official I’ll keep them to myself. lol

As you can see from the first pic, I started early.  I left my house at 0520 and had the boat assembled and was on the water fishing by 0630.  Even though the air temperature was in the low 30′s, the water temperature was in the 50′s.  I know there are a lot of different theories out there about the best time of day to fish, but I say it’s hard to beat the break of dawn on any day, and yesterday did nothing but ingrain that in my mind even more.  By the time 0730 had rolled around, I had caught several nice sized bass, including the biggest of the day.

I caught everything on 5″ black Senkos with blue flake, both wacky rigged and weedless.  And truthfully, I didn’t notice that one rig produced any more fish than the other.  I’d say they were about even for the day.

All in all a great day, and for that I am truly thankful.

Tex Mex’s Day on the Pyongtaek River

Went to the Pyongtaek river and got skunked, but between my Brother in Law Gene (Tall guy with the big ass grin), and Jimbo (the man with the purple sweat shirt), they caught a total of about 10 bass, all their first for 08. I’m still waiting on mine. None were monsters but at least they caught some.  My Borther in Law caught two with my son’s Zebco 33 combo and a rooster tail with only one hook while the rest were caught on small spinner baits and small plastic worms (4″ dark Senkos and 4″ green paddle worms).  Note the beautiful background on one of the pictures (nice trash and old matresses left by our friendly lazy slobs).  Also note we tried to keep our spot secret by taking a picture of one of the bass on an unknown gravel ground just like Nomad does since we couldn’t find a worthy rock

Weekend Fishing Report

I agree with Nomad.  It’s definitely picking up out there.  My wife and I went to the river early yesterday morning and were able to land seven before the gale force winds that Nomad mentioned below drove us away.  Leave it to Mother Nature to ruin an otherwise perfect day!  :)   I don’t have a scale (that works anyway), and didn’t have anything to measure the fish with either, but here are a few pics nonetheless:

Then, I was over in the Anjung-ri area this morning running errands when I noticed (quite surprisingly, since it was Sunday) that nobody was fishing in one of mine and Nomad’s favorite spots, so I couldn’t resist the urge to wet a line for a little bit.  I only fished for about an hour, had a couple of bites, and caught this one.  Again, I didn’t have a scale, but did have a tape measure in the truck this time and it measured pretty close to 17″.  All in all it was a pretty good weekend, and I hope the trend continues for a while.

The U.S. Army has it’s own bass fishing team,

and it looks like they’re up to some really good things.  It’s an all veteran professional tournament team based out of Texas.  Check ‘em out…interesting stuff.

Hunter Dave and his Daughter’s Eventful Sunday Afternoon

After reading some of the posts this morning, the fishing urge got the best of me. I quicky loaded up the car, threw the rugrat into the back seat, and headed off at about 1400. First stop was lake Idong. I drove up the South side of the lake just to take a peek. Casted a few senkos with no luck. Looks real full with plenty of water so far. So I decided to go up to the north side. I’m in the process of going over the hill on the dirt road and I notice it is getting a little slick. I get out and the road has a little more mush than I expected and the road down the other side was a little more steep than I remembered, So I decided not to try it since I was in my 1995 rear wheel drive Daewoo Prince. My daughter wanted to go over to the Hwy 82 pay lake to fish, because she usually does well on bluegill over there and the old man working there always gives her free ice cream. It was windy and nothing was biting over there either. I was digging through my tackle bag and I ran across my Berkley Gulp trout bait. I suddenly thought ‘I wonder?”

So we packed up and drove over to Sangjiland. There were about 10 other people troutfishing with fly rods and they were catching a few, but I could see the trout were very active cruising below the surface. I plopped down my 15,000 won (Rene was free) and we fished from about 1600 to 1730. The bait was Berkley Gulp in pink, orange and chartreuse all with speckled flakes.. They were really hitting the pink and orange well. In 90 minutes, we landed about 6 or 7. Lost another 6 or so right at the edge, and missed at least a dozen other strikes. We were definitely outfishing the others. I don’t think these fish had ever seen Gulp before. My daughter had on a real nice one about 5 pounds that ended up snapping her bluegill rod in half. We lost that one at the edge as well. That was a very action packed 90 minutes. My daughter was a little bummed out that we couldn’t keep the fish to eat.

Nice Smallmouth Catch

This smallmouth was caught on Barkley Lake in KY this morning.  It weighed 4.15 pounds  4 pounds 15 ounces and was released in the small lake in my brother-in-law’s front yard.  The guy in the pic is the one who caught it and his name is Ronnie Nelson.  Nice catch Ronnie!

KY Turkey

Not fishing related I know, but here are a few pics of some turkey in my brother-in-law’s back yard.  He and my sister live near a State wildlife area and they frequently get turkey and deer wandering through their yard.  He said there were over fifty out there the day he took these pics.  Enjoy!

Fishing Show

For those of you who are interested, they’re having a huge fishing show entitled Fishing Korea 2008 from March 14th to the 16th at the Yangjae aT Center, which is located just south of Seoul.  If you’re traveling north on expressway 1, Yangjae is the IC just north of the Pangyo IC.  A good friend of ours, Mr. Yum from BassPia, is on the board and will be up there all three days as well.  You can click on the links above for information on the show, the aT Center or BassPia, and by clicking on the map below you’ll be directed to a much larger one that should provide you with enough details to get you there.

Scenes From KY Lake

I was fortunate enough to be able to get out on KY Lake with my two brother-in-laws while back home for the holidays.  Even though the fishing was rough going, having the December weather cooperate just enough for us to be able to get out on the water, and being able to spend some quality time with my two bro’s was great.  Here are a few pics:

That’s my brother-in-law Gary doing his thing on the left, and my other brother-in-law Eric doing his thing on the right:

Here’s a pic of a bald eagle perched high above in a treetop on the lookout for a meal, and a shot of the channel between KY and Barkley Lakes:

And just in case you’re wondering why there are no pics of Rob doing his thing, it’s because I was too busy catching monsters like this one (actual catch, or snag rather):

January In Korea

I was bored this morning and decided to go for a drive.  Even though it warmed up into the mid 40′s I had a feeling that the river was still going to be iced over, and as you can see from the pic below, it was.  Weird looking ice on the bank, eh?

These geese didn’t mind the icy waters, and man, were they ever loud as they passed by.

Amberjack

For those that are interested in deep-sea fishing, one of our readers (Tex Mex) sent the following narrative and pictures (which you can click to see the full size):

Went after the Amberjack on 26 Oct 07, in Dadepo, Pusan, Korea and caught about 25. As normal, the weather was beautiful all week up until the day we departed Seoul and reached Taegu, at which time the rain came upon us, go figure. It cleared up that night but at 0300 the rain and cold weather came down hard again and delayed our departure on the boat until 0600 instead of 0400. The fishing started up fast and we had about 15 Amberjack on the boat by 0730 between four of us. Then the bad weather turned up again and we were only able to catch about another 10 in the next two hours before the captain of the boat stated the weather was to dangerous for us to continue fishing.

Needless to say, the trip was cut short but we still had a great time. I went on this trip two years ago and we were able to catch over 100 Amberjack between five of us in an eight-hour trip. It takes about 45 minutes for the boat to reach the prime spot so you actually fish for about 6 hours. These fish are some strong pulling fish that can snap rods in two. For those that don’t know, the Amberjack usually run between Sep-Nov and suddenly disappear in December. I think we would have caught more had one of our fisherman not got sick as soon as we departed. The nasty waves hit him quick, causing him to spend most of the trip discarding his lunch from the night before.
