ChungPyung KSA tournament

I fished at ChungPyung on Sunday in the 4th KSA tournament of the year. I put the boat in on Friday night and had a good night’s rest. I fished from 6:00am until 1:00pm on Saturday to try and find a pattern for Sunday’s tournament. I caught 13 bass in total, mostly dinks like these…….

I caught most of the morning’s bass on a SureCatch Sensa-worm Neko rig in about 5 foot of water. Then a switched to a jig-head with a trick-worm and caught a few more including a couple of better sized bass. The bass in this lake/river are generally small, with a 12 incher being pretty good, so these bass around 14 inches were very welcome in my boat. They were good fighters also, put a good bend in my rod.

With a good pattern worked out I called it a day and headed back to the pension where my wife and daughter were impatiently waiting, lol.

Sunday morning, the weather was just the same as the Saturday, so I knew and hoped the bass would still be in the pattern, and I was right. After catching a couple of undersized dinks on a topwater I caught my first keeper (albeit still a dink). Here’s some of the dinks caught on different baits.

Then I moved to my main spot about 10:00am and caught my 3 biggest bass of the tournament within about 5 or 6 casts with an-all chartreuse SureCatch Sniperspin spinnerbait and a pearl Sensortail trailer worm. That was it for a while, then just before weigh-in time (1:30pm) I caught a couple more tiny bass.

With the sun and hot weather we had on Sunday, I was pumping in fresh water every few minutes to keep the bass fight fit. I weighed in my limit for 1,630g which turned out to good enough for 8th place and 100,000won  Smile

Big Ika Day

This morning was one of those mornings where I wished I had more than an hour to fish, because the bass were most definitely biting for whatever reason.

I started out with a spinnerbait while it was still dark, hoping to catch a fish but nothing doing.  Then I switched to Senkos and caught the above, on a 4” Senko (black with blue flakes).  Then I switched to a drop shot hook with no weight, with a watermelon seed-colored finesse worm on it and once again, I hooked into a nice fish which took me into the rocks and broke my line.  BTW, the water is so clear at the point I fish that I could see about 4 feet down and could watch the bass heading for and into the rocks.

After that I put on a Big Ika (smoke with silver flecks) and caught these 3 all within about 15 minutes.  Unfortunately, by then it was time to head in to work.  Not sure what the deal is with spinnerbaits this year, I just haven’t had much luck with them at all, and it sure wasn’t for lack of trying.

What A Day

Today was one of the best, yet most strangest days I’ve ever had fishing.  Ty and I took the SS Netcutter out on the Pyeongtaek River today, and we had a blast.  The day started out bad, with me losing a real nice bass right off the bat.  I had put on a small drop shot hook with no weight, and added a watermelon seed finesse worm.  I threw it against some rocks near the point I fish every morning and immediately the line went tight so I thought I was snagged.  When I tried to yank on the line to loosen the hook, I was surprised to find out I had a big bass on the end of my line, which proceeded to jump out of the water and throw the hook.  After that, it was slim pickings for about an hour and I thought we were in for a bad day, until we moved down near some rock walls which have overhanging brush and lots of debris floating along the shore.  There, we started catching bass after bass…as a matter of fact, we ended up catching around 55 total today.  The problem was, they all looked like this:

At one point, we were having a contest to see who could catch the smallest fish…it was close, I’ll let you decide who won:

IMG_1144 IMG_1146

Ty’s is on the left, mine is on the right.  I think mine is smaller. (And Steve, as you can see, there was no problem with that little dink biting a Big Ika Wink)

IMG_1137

The above was the biggest one caught today, on a green Bitsy Bug Jig, right under that debris you see floating against the shore.  What really made today different besides the number of bass we caught was that for the first time that I can remember, the bass were biting jigs better than they were biting Senkos or other worms/lures.  We probably caught 95% of our fish on jigs today, which was just unreal.  Luckily, Ty had some jigs along because mine are all on their way to Tennessee.  This is probably the last trip I get to take in the SS Netcutter and I have to say, what a good memory this will be.  Thanks, Ty, and sorry I forgot the sandwiches! Ron and Ruben do a little Snakehead fishing

My good friends Ron and Ruben went out a few weeks ago and landed these really nice looking snakehead.  Nice going guys!!  So that’s what they look like!  I wouldn’t know!!  :)

Just Beautiful

I made it back out again this morning and let me tell you, what I nice morning it was.  Just a week ago or so, I was sweating while I was out there taking my walks but this morning it was nice and cool, almost to the point I was thinking about my wind breaker (which is packed up and on the way to Tennessee Smile).  There was even a nice sunrise which I watched and enjoyed and didn’t think about taking a pic of till the very end when the colors started fading:

I started out catching dinks again…

Above is the biggest of the 4 dinks I caught.  After catching that one, I switched to a spinnerbait and chatterbait, then a 10.5” ‘Ol Monster worm, with no luck.  Then 5 minutes before it was time for me go get my morning exercise in before work, I threw on a 4” Senko (black with blue flakes)

And I caught this nice healthy bass which weighed in at 3 1/2 pounds.  Life is good Open-mouthed

Blah

Against my better judgment, I headed out this morning, hoping that the river had cleared up some from yesterday (it looked really bad yesterday afternoon on the way home from work).  The water had cleared up a little bit this morning to where visibility was around 3 inches (I’ve fished worse and caught some fish) but the really bad news was that “they” were letting water out and there was a strong current.  So strong, that when I cast a Senko out about 30 yards, straight out from shore, it drifted downstream and close to shore within 10 seconds.  That’s never good.

The above was the only bite I had this morning, and that rascal was hiding behind a rock, trying to stay out of the current.  After 30 minutes, I packed up my stuff and went on base to do my morning exercise before work,  I sure hope Ty is having better luck down at Kunsan!

Dinks And All

Yesterday, as I was talking with Rob, I mentioned that with the front rolling through today, and the water clearing up, today *should* be a good day to EMB.  When I woke up at 3:45, I looked outside and saw that it was pretty windy but since I was awake, I decided to head on out anyway.  Surely it couldn’t be bad 3 days in a row, could it?

Nope, for once one of my hunches paid off; the bass were biting pretty good today.  I caught 6, mostly dinks and missed just as many.

This was the first one I caught, on the very first cast – which is always a good sign. Thumbs up

I decided to take a pic of every fish I landed today, hence the dink pics.

I saved the best for last.  Yeah baby!  This made an already good Friday complete.  All fish were caught on black, 5 inch Senkos.  I also  tried regular Zoom worms and Big Ikas but no takers.

Dinked!

I finally headed out this morning to check out the river.  The water is down about 4 feet (again) and is still pretty murky, although it is looking better than on previous days.  Since I now exercise in the mornings before work, I only had about 45 minutes to fish this morning.  I threw a Senko for a little while and caught one dink, then switched to a spinnerbait  the remaining time and caught yet another dink, which I proudly show off below:

You can see all of the garbage which is littering the shore everywhere from the recent floods.  If the water conditions keep improving, the fishing may get a little better in the next few days and I may try it again sometime soon.  After all this time, getting up early this morning was mighty tough Smile.

My best August so far

The weather forecast for Wednesday was calling for cloudy and drizzle, so I thought it was going to be a good day on the river. I had the boat in the water by first light but there wasn’t a cloudy in the sky, so I was thinking “hot, brutal and tough fishing”. I was wrong, it was hot and brutal, but the fishing was great! I caught and landed 15 bass (13 of them on various topwater lures) and I must of missed another 10 blowups. All bass caught on SureCatch lures!!

First bass of the day on a 1/4 SureCatch buzzbait.

A few bass caught on SureCatch Phantom’s (similar to a Zara Spook).

Here’s the 2 bass that were not caught with topwater lures.

All the rest of the bass were caught on a white SureCatch Power Shad buzzed across the surface and over grass.

And last but certainly not least, a fat 50cm bass at 4 pounds even.

Nasty

That about sums up the river right now.  When I went out earlier in the week to check it out, it was pretty muddy, with about 2 inches visibility and the water was the lowest I’d ever seen it since I started fishing here.  Yesterday, I had to take my Escape up to Yongsan to get it shipped to the states and on the way home, right outside Seoul, the bus ran into some heavy rain which only lasted a few minutes so I figured the river wasn’t affected and that the water would be a little clearer this morning.

This area must have gotten a ton of heavy rain yesterday because the river is up at least 4 feet from Tuesday morning and visibility is back to about 0.  As soon as I dropped my Senko into the water,it disappeared.  As soon as I saw what the water looked like, I knew it was going to be a short morning.  I did catch one dink, when I dropped my Senko right on its head, but that was the only bite.  I also tried a spinnerbait for a while with no luck so I called it an early morning and went on base so I could exercise before work.  I have 45 days and a wakeup left in Korea; actually less than that if you figure fishing days because our stuff is getting packed on the 18th and 19th of this month and I haven’t decided if I’m going to keep any of my fishing gear here or not…but I would really love to get just one more decent day out on the water before I do fly out.

SureCatch’s new buzzbait

I picked up some of SureCatch’s new 1/4oz buzzbaits this morning and I just had to give them a little test on a small pond on my way home!  I had a few hits on the #018 color and landed this little fellow in a drizzle rain. Then the rain came down heavy and I went home.

I’ll be taking the boat of tomorrow for the day, hoping for a good day!!

Ron Likes Him Some Snakehead

Ron headed out to the Snakehead lake this morning.  He had a whole bunch of hits, had one break his 30 pound braid, and unlike Nomad and I last weekend, he actually managed to get one on the shore.  :)   Nice looking fish Ron!

19.  That’s the number of snakeheads Rob and I missed today .  Check out the pond we fished:

We were both using braid with Spro frogs and we were definitely fishing the frogs correctly because in about 2 1/2 hours, we got 19 fish to come up and take the lure, and most of them grabbed it and took it under (a couple came up, hit the frog and left it alone or immediately spit it back out).  We waited till we felt the fish on the line and then set the hook but every time, they got off.  I have no idea what what we were doing wrong because even with the fish that felt like they were on after hookset, and they put up a fight, they ended up getting off somehow.  And it wasn’t from not setting the hook hard enough because on one, I set the hook so hard that I hurt my wrist.  There are some big snakehead in this pond; the first one I hooked into jumped out of the water and looked to be about 2 feet long.  If anyone wants to chime in to let us know what the secret of catching these fish is, please do so because all Rob and I could do was laugh after missing fish after fish after fish.  This was definitely an interesting fishing trip out, to say the least.
