Nasty

That about sums up the river right now.  When I went out earlier in the week to check it out, it was pretty muddy, with about 2 inches visibility and the water was the lowest I’d ever seen it since I started fishing here.  Yesterday, I had to take my Escape up to Yongsan to get it shipped to the states and on the way home, right outside Seoul, the bus ran into some heavy rain which only lasted a few minutes so I figured the river wasn’t affected and that the water would be a little clearer this morning.

This area must have gotten a ton of heavy rain yesterday because the river is up at least 4 feet from Tuesday morning and visibility is back to about 0.  As soon as I dropped my Senko into the water,it disappeared.  As soon as I saw what the water looked like, I knew it was going to be a short morning.  I did catch one dink, when I dropped my Senko right on its head, but that was the only bite.  I also tried a spinnerbait for a while with no luck so I called it an early morning and went on base so I could exercise before work.  I have 45 days and a wakeup left in Korea; actually less than that if you figure fishing days because our stuff is getting packed on the 18th and 19th of this month and I haven’t decided if I’m going to keep any of my fishing gear here or not…but I would really love to get just one more decent day out on the water before I do fly out.

Funnel Cloud

Totally unrelated to fishing, unless you were out in a boat when this thing touched down or you were one of the many carp muttons that line the banks of the Anseong River:

Yes sir, a real funnel cloud, the first I’ve ever seen in Korea.  It touched down somewhere over the Anseong River (looked like out toward Dunpo, near Asan Bay) and then disappeared shortly after.

19

19.  That’s the number of snakeheads Rob and I missed today .  Check out the pond we fished:

We were both using braid with Spro frogs and we were definitely fishing the frogs correctly because in about 2 1/2 hours, we got 19 fish to come up and take the lure, and most of them grabbed it and took it under (a couple came up, hit the frog and left it alone or immediately spit it back out).  We waited till we felt the fish on the line and then set the hook but every time, they got off.  I have no idea what what we were doing wrong because even with the fish that felt like they were on after hookset, and they put up a fight, they ended up getting off somehow.  And it wasn’t from not setting the hook hard enough because on one, I set the hook so hard that I hurt my wrist.  There are some big snakehead in this pond; the first one I hooked into jumped out of the water and looked to be about 2 feet long.  If anyone wants to chime in to let us know what the secret of catching these fish is, please do so because all Rob and I could do was laugh after missing fish after fish after fish.  This was definitely an interesting fishing trip out, to say the least.

My Name is Frank and I’m a Fishaholic

First of all; a sad, sad sight indeed.

See that?  “I don’t see anything,” you say to yourself.  That’s right, because right there is where the SS Netcutter and her batteries, trolling motor and other accessories used to be stored.  Ty came over yesterday and took her away and she’s all his now.  I hope I can get one more trip out with him before our stuff gets packed up but I’m a little doubtful with this weather we’ve been having.

Now, let’s get to the illness, the fishing sickness which overtook me in the last 4 years.  When I tell people I have “a lot of fishing stuff” they don’t realize that by “a lot” I mean A LOT.  Consider the following evidence:

Seriously.  Does one man really need all these rods?  I’ve taken the liberty of counting them for you.  19 rods total, with 16 of them having reels on them.  WTF?!?  Again; seriously, why does one man need that many rods?  I’m not even going to tell you about the 4 or 5 reels I have sitting off to the side (And dude, what’s up with all those hats?).

Exhibit #2:

Every one of those drawers is filled to overflowing with, you guessed it, fishing tackle of some sort or another from 2 big drawers full of spinnerbaits, drawers full of Senkos, crankbaits, frogs, line, and other assorted tackle.  There’s more tackle in those drawers alone than most people will use in a lifetime of fishing but I still find myself browsing at the Bass Pro or some other website, looking for yet MORE STUFF.

Last but not least:

Who doesn’t have a closet full of fishing stuff?  Yes, everything you see in there is somehow related to fishing from more tackle, lures, waders, worms and you name it.  And let’s not forget the  tackle bags I have sitting off to the side; one for the boat (which probably has enough stuff in it to go fishing for an entire season) to my other bag, which I only use for EMB (gotta travel light for EMB).  It’s gotten to the point where every time a package arrives, my wife asks me, “more fishing stuff?” and then walks away, shaking her head.  LOL  What will happen when I move into a real house with a 2-car garage, and buy myself one of these? Why, I guess I’ll have to buy more stuff, eh?

Spring Is Here!

Oh wait…no, it’s not.

Winter Pics

Rob took a ride out to the river this morning and took some pics for me.  There’s still lot of construction being done along and on the levee and I doubt they’ll be done by spring…but that’s ok, as long as I can get down to or near the water.

Check out the pics below…

And does anyone have any idea what these things are???

Federal ban on lead fishing tackle proposed

A proposal to ban all lead in fishing tackle is under consideration by the federal government, and your comments of opposition are needed to counter the threat.

This ban proposed in a petition by the Center for Biological Diversity and other environmental groups would include not only sinkers and jigs, but components that contain lead, including brass and ballast in spinnerbaits and lures of all kinds.

If passed, this could possibly cause a significant rise in tackle prices.  Read the article and click on the link at the end to contact your congressman.

He’s Back!

From Ty:

“Nomad here are the pics from Asan Bay 6 June 2010.
I’ve been itching to get out and fish after two and a half weeks in the states and I couldn’t wait any longer so Jim and I headed out to Asan Bay at 3pm on 6 June 2010. No bites for the first 30 minutes and then it was on. I managed to catch 6 and Jim caught 4 but we both had one break our line. Also right after the first boat ramp there are chains up to stop vehicles from going any further down the road. I took some pictures of the signs that were out and have no idea what they say right now. Enjoy the pics.”

Guess who’s back from his vacation in the states?  And those bass on the stringer, he and Jim are only obeying the local laws, as you’ll see in a second as you continue reading.  Law abiding fellas, those two smile_wink

Above, you can see that the road we used to drive down to get to a really good point is now chained off to vehicular traffic.  The white sign in the 2nd pic says that of 4 June, the road is blocked because the many cars that were driving up and down it were bothering the farmers that have their fields a bit further down.  Ok, whatever.  Better start closing down every frigging rice paddy road and any other road that goes next to the fields in Korea then.  After all, one can’t be bothering the farmers. The blue sign has several warnings such as that anyone caught using a casting net without a proper license from city hall can get prison time as well as a hefty fine.  The sign also goes on to warn that throwing bluegill and bass back into the water is illegal.  Again, ok, whatever.  As long as gill nets and the other nets that are put in every 10 yards are legal and it’s ok to keep fish of every size with no hint of conservation whatsoever, I’ll be putting back every single bass I catch until I get on the plane back to the states.  After all, I can’t read Korean so as far as I know, that sign could be warning me against keeping bass because of the polluted water smile_teeth
